  1. Heh. I like the 4-door fastback - is it supposed to be a '58 Hudson? (57-8 Plymouth with an AMC Marlin roof).

The middle one works okay (60-61 Plymouth or Dodge roof with fins), but the Chrysler pickup looks goofy, roof too short, or too rounded at the back. I thought about doing one of those with a '60 and couldn't come up with a drawing that didn't suffer the same issues.

You ever get the feeling no matter what you say, it just falls on deaf ears?
BadBob - that is a beautiful car - what a great metamorphosis.

To be specific, this car sold to John O'Quinn, one of the most prolifiic collectors in the nation with over 900 cars! To be fair, here are some better pics of the car.

Now I ask you, how many of us have the drive and vision (and balls) to produce a one-of-a-kind Kustom like this?! I'm not saying it's the most beautiful job in the world, but you have to give the builder credit for an awesome concept. How many hours of sweat equity are in this creation? Just look at some of Harley Earl's stuff!

Point I would make is that through the years, after seeing custom after custom after custom, our design tastes become more refined, more educated. The stuff a 1st year guy would build cannot compare to what a guy with 30 years of experience would build. And it is the experienced build that everyone tries to copy. Why? Because it's perfect.

But as others have said, to each thier own. There is room for all. I like the half-finished hoodlum cars; the cars that were designed from a scotch high; and the show cars....it's a reflection of their owners. Beats sittin' on the couch watchin' golf or Ice Truckers on the boob tube!! Here's a toast to the guys that are doin' it!

Well, we can agree to disagree. To each his own. Let bygones be bygones. My momma used to say, if you can't say anything nice don't say nuthin at all.

Gigantor, I agree with you. There are the guys who are in a hurry to get the car on the road and will take short cuts that ultimately make the car LOOK like only 6-months or a year has been spent on it. So be it. But I spent 25 years on a Jaguar XKE because I didn't want to take any shortcuts (of course, available funds have a great deal to do with it). But when it was finished, it was a national champion in a very competitive class.

So yeah, you can roll some Rustoleum on your car or finish the exterior body while having rusted-out floorboards, but there's a diff between doing it right and doing it wrong. I guess it's all a matter of diff degrees of cool. There's also the diff line of thinking that it's on the road and driving regardless of shape (like in the 50's)...I can see that as well.

  12. That's the first time i've seen the inside of that car. Those purple knobs stick out lika a wedding dick! Don't go with the rest of the car. I'm kinda on the fence with this car. Love bubble-top cars, but not one that looks like you welded Caddy parts on the side of a 57 Ford with Caddy bumpers. Most of the bubble-top cars were fenderless,Road Agent,Beatnic Bandit(semi fenderless),Manta Ray,etc. This looks too much like a car with the wheels covered. I don't know. Help me out here!
PS-where's the "timeout" doll with the space suit?

Bob: Well what options did the designer have? A traditional dash panel w/knobs across? That would have looked even more out of place given the rest of the design. I think he was going for the retro "futuristic" look. Perhaps no dash at all would have worked too. Below, the 1951 Buick LaSabre Concept car. Tell me this ain't wierd!

  14. Retro-futuristic? Isn't that like "big-small"? WTF! He should have used something chrome or(GAG!)billet. No resin knobs on "futuristic" cars! It's like when you see a Streetrod at a show, with a blown motor, leather interior, expensive paint, and Pep Boys wheels. The details make a car. When you miss one,you usually disrupt the flow of the car. Take a look inside most of the futuristic,bubble-top cars and you'll see that they usually don't have anything on the dashes. Less is more!(corny huh!)

By "retro-futuristic", I mean cars like the LaSabre in my post that were done in 1951. Obviously, the purple car is "recent", but trying to capture the look of cars "that we were promised" back in the 50's. I agree that details make or break the car, and with some, it can come down to minutia such as hex bolts vs. allen heads!!

My personal opinion, the interior just looks too "plastic" for my taste. One false move by a short-skirted gal or over-active child, and that cone control knob is on the floor! (I used "short-skirted gal" only because of wishful thinking and the bad-boy state of mind ;-)

  16. I bet people looked at that LeSabre and thought it was way out! I would die to have that car now! Harley Earl right?

It's a lot easier to get attention in green and orange Speedos than in a tailored Italian suit, which do you really want?

  19. oh holy shit, I just got home from the bar and I am fucked up, but not as fucked up as this thing... goddamn, did it rust that way or is it cut like that on purpose? If it is, where can I buy what this motherfucker is on? It would be nice to have no memory of making this post......

  20. Okay, the last one was bad enough, but this thing.. if the Batmobile and a dildo had a baby, this is it. I'm afraid to look back through this thread, if I'm not banned now for being poliically incorrrect as fuck, I am sure I will be if I keep looking,

Never let it be said it's always bad to be fucked up on alcohol I guess...

Okay, I looked further. I can't complain about the Factory GM cars. I'd rather drive that Buick than the last two. And any of them and a Hyundai over some of the others in this thread.

    anyhow...

  21. I know about the "to each their own" thing, and the "if you can't say something nice" thing. Is it okay to ask where you can get the same drugs these people were on when they penned up some of these cars? There sure are periods of time in my life I wish I could just forget, forever. Let's start with the last 10 minutes........

The fender/headlight-arrangement sucks to high heaven, but the rest of the car rules.

Well said. The rules in show-circuit back often demanded that the cars had to have some changes done to them since last year. This was to keep things fresh for the spectators, but it also is responsible for a lot of unbroken things being fixed so to speak. Also more mods scored you more points by the judges. Shit like that doesnt help wellballanced designs.

Not a Barris-creation. Thats Bob Crespos 40 Ford built by Carl Wilhelm.

    Tail looked pretty neat though.

  27. When I FINALLY made it to the Peterson museum, several years ago, The Deora literally gave me goosebumps. For a ,Joe Lunchbucket basement model builder from the rustbelt, seeing this beauty in person was like Wayne and Garth meeting Heather Locklear...
    .."I'm not worthy!" :p

BTW...did you know that this Dodge funded project actually has a Ford station back window as it's flip-up windscreen.
