I know that at one time the sun never set on the United Kingdom, but you have downsized over the years. I think we can all find London on a world map, but is it in ENGLAND or the UK ? To me England has always been England, the UK is/was all the other possessions. When and why did the names become interchangeable?
Hi, Its in England ! The U.k. or United Kingdom refers to England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland. A combined group of countries. If you think of England as a small state , along with the other states named Scotland , Wales and Ireland , and the U.K. as a group of United states , this may help !!

England is a word that you are almost banned from using these days...in England anyway.United Kingdom is a term used by others not usually the people who live here..as for the united bit, every body hates every body it goes back into history, but if any one of us is threatened we`re united, sort of like a family really.Don`t use the term Brits, it was coined by the terrorists.anyhow way way off topic.

Britain refers to the Roman name as we were part of the state of Brytainy way back in ad 100.England refers to the Engles who were the first known settlers and who also built stone henge way before the Romans were about approx 3,000 years before.The Engles sailed down from the scandinavian countries and settled here that is when we were first known as engle land.I prefer to be called English as i was born here and can trace my roots back as far as the doomsday book from the 11th century.Some prefer British most understand British but i think to be British is not to be English and i am English just as you are American.I love this country but not what politicians are doing to it and that it seems to be a crime to say you are English...............Marq
