I have a few carburetor rebuilds coming up. I’ve been wanting to buy an ultrasonic cleaner for awhile now, but never got around to it. Time to test the waters. I did a search, and there’s plenty of info on the best solutions to use in the machine, but not much on what machines themselves work best. So I would want a typical torn down 4 barrel to fit inside all at once. But not so big that it will break the bank filling with cleaning solution. Any brands to avoid? I’d like to spend no more than $200 if possible. Thanks for any tips.
I have a 15L Vevor. I don’t remember the model, as there are a few in this size, but I did look for the model with the highest wattage on heater and transducers. It doesn’t take long to heat up. It has an adjustable digital temp control and timer. I don’t use it everyday, but on my long weekends I may use it all day long for a couple days. Im happy with it. I use water, Simple Green, and one or two dollar store wonder liquids. Make the shop smell good when it is cooking.
I have a Vevor that has served me well for several years. They are available in different sizes that will enable a four barrel carb to fit. I use liquid industrial soap mixed with water.
In a lab setting at work we use Alconox for cleaning a lot of metals (available at a lot of different lab supply type places). It works on a lot of stuff, but it can discolour or etch soft metals like aluminum and copper if you don't rinse it immediately. At home I tend to use simple green. You can use less cleaner by using a solid basket in your ultrasonic cleaner when you're not using the full capacity. Put the parts and cleaner in the basket, fill the ultrasonic machine outside the basket with water, and run it.
I was shown a variation on this. Put the parts in a ziplock bag with your cleaning fluid, and water in the machine. Just toss the bag when done
Mine came from either Amazon or EBay, I don’t recall which. It was advertised as capable of handling a four barrel Holley. foe small items, I fill a Mayonnaise jar with a solution of Simple Green or Awsome and water, or even mix a batch of citric acid if the victim is rusty, then fill the tub with water. Makes cleanup easier.
I have a 30 liter Vevor and use Simple Green purple (HDPro) it’s a concentrate so you can dilute it. The machine is full of the Simple Green but I do stick small parts or extremely dirty stuff in a ziplock full of cleaner as not to contaminate the whole batch of cleaner. I have had great results.
Beware of cheap Chinese "ultrasonic" cleaners- I got a repair into the shop which was sold as an "ultrasonic cleaner for jewellery " , that was bought on Ebay, it turned out to be just a small DC motor with an out-of-balance weight on the rotor, JB welded to the bottom of the tank, with a small heater element on the tank. You can buy the basic components (power supply & transducer) for about $50. If you have a small stainless tank lying around looking for a home, it is a good cheap little project. Just fill with boiling water from the kettle.
Thanks everyone. I guess I went a little bigger than planned as you mentioned you can fill partially with water! Didn’t know that trick, which is why I ask these questions. I just ordered this 600 watt 30 liter.
