That's not a bad price on a complete hemi...it seems like it is about average.

Running 392 with proof of mileage...thats about right for the price. If it were an auction, It would start out at about 2K and would finish in that ball park. You gotta pay to say "it's gotta a hemi".

If people don't like the price they can always go buy 5 rebuilt belly ****on engines and some will....

Seriously, how about $30,000 for a correct numbers matching rebuilt 426 hemi that will make your (once robbed) 70 hemi'cuda correct and worth 150 or 200+ grand in decent shape.

    Yeap hemis are gold.

    jmho and opinions vary

  10. I wonder just how much Craig Jackson paid to get the original hemi back from England for his car? Found it through the hemi registery and had to have it back! Unless of course that was the $30,000.00 hemi.....

I hear ya. I was surprised to see the going values for them myself.

A few years back I was totally stoked on the idea of taking my flathead out of my daily chopped 50 Merc 2 dr and going 392/4 spd and a highway friendly-esque rear. Found one in a junkyard still in the car for $400. Hood was halfway missing so Im sure it was junk...no biggie just needs a rebuild rite?

HOLY COW! Started looking into the parts for a rebuild and nearly ****ped myself. Not only that but Hot Heads or the such for any "performance" parts for that mill? I could have had another chopped Merc!

I will have about $12,000 in my 392 when it is all said and done.

I think this is a very relavant topic for tech week. Most armchair quarterbacks with their "That car needs a hemi" statements really have no idea what they cost. I am going back to SBC's after this one. Ha Ha Ha

FWIW If I avagerage what I've paid for my hemis it comes out to less than $200 per hemi. None of them were 392's but none of them were the older extended bell. 2 Dodges, 1 Desoto, 6 Chrysler Industrial 354's. You just have to be very patient and network a LOT. Two of the 354's and one of the Dodges were running when I got them. Mind you this is just getting the core. Building them can be scary expensive!

My average for complete core 392's, half of them with transmissions, is $300, but I haven't bought any of them for about 10 years. Kerry's absolutely right in that if you're patient and chase leads you can find some deals. I bought a running, 46,000 mile 354 for $4000 three years ago, but that price included the original rust-free New Yorker that came with the motor.

  17. If you're dilligent enough, they'll come to you cheaper.

I found one in Canada for a couple hundred, and one in Indiana for 500. Neither was running, both were 392's.

331's with the extended bell usually go cheaper, but are just as good.

im sure you can find a short block for cheap its the top end that you pay for. you could build a motor SBC, SBF, whatever and spend that much in building something as stout as a 392. if you think about it if you bought a hemi 10 years ago for 300-500 ans still have it you made money putting miles on a motor. its an investment especially for a 392 or 426.

  19. Actually- it's gold leaf, and the water jackets are encrusted with jade and ruby baggets...

To be honest, if it's running, that's not a bad price for an elephant motor.

Hey Chris, that's how I ended up with your trans ! I drove from Ottawa, Canada to Unionville NJ to find a decent, reasonably priced HEMI push****on Torqueflite for my project....reasonably priced being key here..........Now I'm grumbling about HEMI parts prices.

I'm a gold chainer now? Wow... Who would of thunk it.

If you go with most any of the older engines it's going to get pricey. For example, have you seen what 348/409 stuff is going for these days? My point is if you like an engine and want to run it, save your pennies and do it. Don't let any of the naysayers talk you out of it. It's your car... build it your way.

I don't have a hemi to impress anyone. I grew up reading my dad's 50's and 60's Hot Rods and became convinced as a kid that I wanted one. Had to wait a long time but mine is a driver and a runner, not a show piece.

OK. Getting off of my soapbox now.

At the infamous Middle River auction 2 weeks ago in Northern Minnesota (discussed in various other HAMB threads), a complete 57 Imperial field car with 392 sold for $2300. I bid to $1500 and dropped out cuz I already have a good 330 DeSoto for my 37 pickup project.

I had a 354 for my '36 Dodge Coupe back in '77. I bought the engine complete with ****** for $50 and listened to it run before he pulled it for me. Back then parts were like hens teeth for the 354. My machine shop called Crane and they agreed to look for a blank and grind it if I agreed to take whatever they could get to grind out. I ended up having to have the spring seats reworked and teflon seals fit in order to get the inner, dampeners and outer springs installed. It idled really nice at about 1900 but sounded REALLY good at 1400.

My $50 dollar engine back then ended up costing about $7k. I really miss the sound of a good running hemi but I had to pay the hospital bill when my oldest son was born.

Ive bought a car (1953 Chrysler Limo) in Argentina, and brought it over to Brazil, just for the engine (331 Hemi ) ...thats how bad I wanted it..and how scarce they are over here...
At the end,its how bad you want it,if you think its too much to pay,you probably dont "need/want" it that much...and thats ok...
Like said before: you should build your car, your way...and I know this sounds kinda obvious, but ,its not.
    Price is relative...
