Working on getting this old quick change in the car. I thought I could keep the stock 32 crossmember and spring ,but not any clearance . So I’m gonna pull the body and swap to model A stuff. Put your spring in the front and it will work fine.

Spring in front of axle? Not behind? That would make the rear axle back way too far. Wheels would be off a mile on the body,it’s already back a bit IMG_6135.jpeg

Also the rear frame has been pie cut at one time as it was close to the crossmember with the stock 32 banjo

What you need is a model A cross member and a model A spring.

I have one it’s in the pic. I thought it would work without it. This my first 30’s car.

IMG_6347.jpeg Getting ready to pull the body I took the trunk off and washed it with an SOS pad. I’ve never hit it with water yet. Not really sure it’s been washed in a very long time. I think some of this white paint is house paint. Lol. It comes off easy. I’m trying to be gentle. The body is pretty rough on this old thing and has been all torch welded together so I have no plans to restore it. Just continue to improve I hope! IMG_6348.jpeg

I like the "As Found" look, the world has plenty of shiny finished '32's.

Been a lot of work to swap this rear axle to the quick change. Split the body and frame today so I can swap the rear crossmemeber. It will be worth all the effort ! IMG_6358.jpeg IMG_6361.jpeg IMG_6359.jpeg IMG_6365.jpeg IMG_6366.jpeg IMG_6367.jpeg

Tack lots of cross braces on the frame so it doesn’t get crooked and warped when you remove the 32 crossmember.

    Kool fact...
The white isn't 'paint' as we know it, It's called White Wash, Which back in the day was common, It was the byproduct of Acetylene generators, People had them in there basement, An plumbed through house for lighting etc.
Colt, as in the gun company made them also..

I’m assuming I’ll just use the quick change end to drain it. Pull the plate. Would have been nice to have a bottom drain

The stuff came off with just water. Lol. I gave it an SOS bath. I think it turned out killer IMG_6396.jpeg IMG_6397.jpeg IMG_6398.jpeg IMG_6402.jpeg IMG_6401.jpeg IMG_6403.jpeg

Hi, I'm looking at the front end photo you posted, specifically the spring installation. Are you going to install a channel of some sort for the crossmember? In the photo it looks like the spring is connected to angle iron with no support for the for the front of the spring U-bolts.

That’s how it was done when car was built late 40’s. It’s got a big insert also that’s inside the frame rail you don’t see. It’s actually pretty strong. Car sat since 52. I drove it all summer that way. I may change it down the road.

With a car like this, I believe the old saw "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies. Take a close look at it from time to time. Personally, I don't see much wrong with it.

Got the dummy torque tube made. I’m re using the front portion but using a different tube for the rear part. This was the tube that came with the rear end. It’s super short and I’ll never be able to use it is why I cut it plus the front part is nicer IMG_6553.jpeg IMG_6552.jpeg IMG_6551.jpeg

Looking good. How's the angle of the spring/shackles? A friend had issues with the angle of the rear spring vs the spring mounts in a similar application

They’re level right now with no load. Hopefully it will be about right when loaded.
