Hi all, with my motor and cab in place I'm at a point where i need to make a decision on where to mount the radiator. The motor is mid-mounted with the front cylinders (2) under the cab. If I go with mounting the radiator under the cab it will be below the seat and I am a little concerned with heat. If I mount it behind the grill I would need either a different radiator or some major modifications to the front clip support structure. Below you can see the 2 options. In the first picture this area will be opened up front engine access (seat riser will remain and be reinforced) and and installing a radiator mount would be easy still using the donor radiator. In the second and third pictures you can see the area I have to work with up front. So with a few details what are your opinions on heat build up under the cab? and is it worth the extra effort to mount it up front?

Can you tilt the rad.? Sort of like the corvette.

  3. Get really radical, set it up above the engine behind the cab, with hydraulic driven fans ala large buses. Freightliner built a really short semi tractor with the engine set forward so far there was no room for a radiator, they mounted it behind the cab and ran a belt driven jack shaft along side the engine to power the fan.
Another idea is the system used on the very old Mack AC, they used two tall, narrow radiators mounted sideways in the cowl, this idea could be repositioned back beside your engine.
    Just throwing out some ideas.

Another idea if you move the radiator further away would be to add an Electric water pump to help coolant flow. Just make sure the thermostat has a hole in it even 3/8 so the coolant flows when the EWP is running. You can also set up EWP to run with the electric fans so they turn on at the same time.

I looked at the tilting idea. The radiator is the same width as the frame at the front, if I tilt it I run into issues with the lower hose aiming right at the frame rail. Back behind the suspension the frame widens up enough for it to set between the rails. At this point I think I will try it in front of the engine with lots of insulation on the floor covers. Interesting idea about the side mounted radiators, I think buses also do it that way so I'm sure it can be made to work.

That's what I did... And used a considerable lean nearly identical to when it was in the Corvette.

Interesting Wetskier, so why the large degree of tilt? Is there a clearance issue to the floor on your build or was it to try and remove heat. On mine I think I can mount it vertical with about 8 inches clearance to the ground and 3 inches below the floor.

I wish I had 3 inches! :) Two reasons the rad is mounted like that.... Basically its the same as when it was in the Corvette and the relationship to the engine is the same so stock C5 radiator hoses fit and I'm very close to the floor which is already bumped up to accommodate the engine. Right now sitting in a borrowed bucket seat behind the wheel, I'm too high. I'll need to find seats that shave off an inch or two that are a bit more luxurious than the stock 1941 units which were little more than stadium seating with a shop towel on them.
