Doing the hood for my Merc- It's covered everywhere undernieth. The heat gun will be working OT,but there are some places I won't be able to get. Easy-off? Chemical stripper, the girl down the street with the funny teeth? Just looking for some ways to get the 'coating out of the hard to reach places.Blasting probably won't happen as it's thick(girl down the street) ,so I have to find another method.Any idea's? Thanks.
I do spray in bedliners at work sometimes. Basically the same stuff. If you let Xylol sit on it, sometimes it will help to break the bond. Good luck either way.
Gasoline or diesel will work on the old gooey asphalt type undercoating, if that's what you're dealing with.
Exactly, ive done a bunch of this and thats about all you can do....... dont try sandblasting ...... it dont work, dont ask
if the undercoat is old don't use heat or stuff to soften it. make a 2" wide paddle for your air chisel , make sure all the edges are rounded off. turn your air pressure down to about 10-15 psi. hold the paddle at a slight angle and just rattle it off yes, the first time i heard this i thought the guy was on crack ....the i tried it and it worked great
If it's the heavy tar stuff that's found under a 50 Chevy hood these roto strip tools work like a charm. It's how I stripped the inside of the metal on my hoodlum project.Fast ,easy, and safe.
Torch, heat it then s****e it off. Yes it stinks, yes it's socially unacceptable, but........... Lippy
Use Kingford charcoal lighter fluid it will dissolve undercoating and is easy to wipe up the goop DO NOT LIGHT IT just spray it on and wipe it off.. the **** under my hood was about an inch thick and it cleaned it like new...
I like to use a long & sharp wood lathe cutting bit/chisel and a hammer. Slower than an air hammer and no fumes. Plus its something to do at 4:00am without waking anyone up.
That sounds like a good idea I'll make sure I don't have a smoke goin' when I try it. There's just some places where I won't be able to s****e=2'' blade, and the heat gun won't hit. I know gas will take care of it,but.... Good idea's people-anymore? The majority will be easy, just the nooks and cranies(?) This thing is coated! Probably 1/4 thick in the middle where I can get,but all the underside's of the pannels and tough places are the problems. Thanks again.
i stripped that sit off the bottom of my 50 fleetline with an angle grinder with a wire brush. nasty job, especially in the wheel wells
