I was always a Chevy or Ford guy but after being sick of trying to find my wife a decently priced shoebox project i started looking outside the box and ran into her 54 plymouth for a really good price. Here is a pic of Jay bringing the roof down a little to help it flow a little nicer
For me I have messed with many cars and admired many more. Starting with Mopars I noticed they were always fast out of the box. Handled like driving a marshmellow and parts were so much they rivaled the national debt. I wised up and moved to Fords and other brands finding my little hard earned dollar went farther. I have yet to be afraid of jumping into other makes and the parts are reasonable and you don't get crucified for doing something not stock.
Had a 49 Hudson Commodore in high school. Nosed, decked, shaved it and painted it black. Was a sharp car. Wish I could have chopped it also. Put a 56 nailhead in one in 62. It was fast and would really corner for a big car. Suprised I don't see more of them as sleds. Butch
I've always thought the early - mid 60's Plymouth Valiants could be fun to mess with. From bizarre styling (early 60's) to plain homely boxes by the mid-later 60's- most could definitely use some customization / hot rodding. The same thoughts apply to early Darts / Chevy II's / & falcons.
Should have watched The Puppy Bowl instead. The power did not get cut, and the wiener dog really outplayed the b***et.
I also have no intrest in sports. I think it`s crazy that some guys don`t like cars. On a side note. There was a football game on national TV back in the 70`s. One team was beating another team pretty badly. The time allotted for the game had expired and a Disney movie came on the air. The team that was behind came back to win in overtime after the game was off the air. People from around the country called ABC or who ever it was and complained. The m*** of phone calls jammed the phone system for quite sometime(days?). Since then, they now have extensions on sporting events so they can be watched until the event is over.
Here's what an Avanti looks like without the factory rear buldging gl***. Now imagine if it were replaced instead with gl*** that followed the same line as the C pillar and a panel was created to continue the trunk line up to the base of the new gl***. IMO it would give the car a more balanced and less bloated look. Always told myself if I accidently broke my rear gl*** one day during restoration, I'd have to seriously consider trying this. Unfortunately that rear gl*** is stronger than I thought.
I'm a Ford guy & thought 50's & early 60's Mopars were about the ugliest things ever made growing up. Fast forward to recent years & those year Mopars are the 1st ones I ck out at shows now.
Why not like football? With all of the training, pads, steroids, EPO, HGH, and surgeries, the players are just like hot-rodded people My grandfather was always a Desoto/Chrysler/Dodge guy; cars, trucks, vans, eveything. Even all the way through the K-car and minivan years. Come to think of it, the bottom really dropped out in the styling department didnt it? That later stuff was best used for monster truck rallies.
Von Dust chopped DeSoto... More photos and detail here...http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558868&highlight=von+dust&page=2
I saved this photo of a '55 DS a long time ago -- I think it was in a cl***ified ad somewhere. I thought the car was really tasty, and nicely understated: Sorry about the dinky little image.
I don't hate it, I just don't care enough about it to spend any time watching. Same as NASCAR, modern drag racing, monster trucks, you get the picture.
Back to the subject, tri-five Mopars, some of the best designs ever. Compared to most other popular tri-five era cars, not only do they have great style, but their Hemi's ain't bad either.
That '54 Plymouth is looking good. I like the lines on fenders and quarters. Quarters almost have a Shoebox look to them. Those definitely are improved greatly by shaving the side trim minus maybe the stone guard on the quarters.
Well done Gotgas. I have always preffered the Adveturer grill/bumper and with the New Yorker trim it is the best of what Mopar had to offer. Beauuuuuuutiful.
