you know if you needed a good sofa I'm sure youre local classifieds had one in it. haha that looks like it would have been fun to do.
Been there too...if you're buyin' parts like that, somebody has to do the cutting. Much more fun when it's you! Bryan
How long did it take to cut it up? I wanna see if my scrappin' skills are comparable to everyone elses. Could have an old car dismantling speed challenge if we had people to videotape it.
If only we could cut up stupid people and use them to fix smart people. I tried the same thing with that 52 Ford 4dr... nobody wanted it for $100, nobody wanted it for free, so the biggest parts of it went to the scrapyard. kept the stuff that could sold and shipped. biggest thing was the dash.
Awesome post! No shit...not too popular to share pix of the dirty work but as real as it gets. Feels good. Just tearin up my 54 AD for redo and it's nearly the same. Just less cutting. Thanks for sharin em.
Hey Slag....... you have a Charles Manson like hatred for all things 4 door......... my Pops made me drive a 4 door 78 Malibu all through high school but you must have really had a bad experience!!!!!! Jeff
Bullshit! But only if the roof is long. Looks like y'all had a good time, sorry I missed it. So there is gonna be a Elco show in Austin end of March?
Kinda reminds me of that Hot Rod mag article a while back. They had a big old Caddy, the kept cutting parts off of it and flogging it down the drag strip to see how much faster it got as they lightened it up. The last shot was just a the bare chassis/drivetrain with the seat bolted down, running the quarter.
Boy am I glad thats done, now I can bring all my shit down there and you have room to store it. Plus you can forword the pics to OSHA for a how to lesson.
so ill add some fuel to the fire ,here are some pics of it when we got to the feild .it was just starting to rain, one of those misty /foggy days .then all of a sudden it started raining like hell.on most of the feild cars the wheels wont roll .this thing just rolled right into place.winched right onto the trailer...
and this is where it gets fun after we unloaded it ,and put on some dry clothes.we started going over what needed to be saved and who was getting what .out came the torch & sawsall.
just for shits and giggles we wanted to see if it would turn over ,mounted the battery to the right control arm ,crossed the starter wire to the battery and it turned over .rashy poured some gas down the carb and it fired off.we ran a piece of wire from the carb linkage back the rear set.ran a hose from the fuel pump to a gallon of gas .flat-blk crossed the wires ,rashy controled the throttle (from the back set).it fired up took a little adjusting on the carb. but it started idealing.the return spring came off once and it went wideopen .hell it tried to backup before we got the tranny into park.
I still can't believe that thing runs so nice! And for all the worry warts, every bit of the car will be used, except maybe the cowl, and some four door specific pieces. And yes, they quit making them a long time ago, along with the parts we need that will keep two El Caminos, a 2 door sedan and who knows what else on the road. A fair trade for sure. When you buy some parts off of Ebay or whereever, this is where they come from folks. Not for the sqeemish but fun for sure!
It's hard to pickup a sawzall and not want to cut shit up. Is the ass-end being used for something? Might be really good for a bed for a truck or something wild.
there was a gent that shipped a 59 to Sweden? norway? I dunno one O dem places near there....back end got severly crunched in shipping... If you dont have plans for the back of the car I would be willing to bet ol' boy would want that rear sheet metal...
The article was Caddy Hack. HRM Feb 1987. I loved that article and have a PDF of it. It was an inspiration for several car chopping projects. Nothing as old at that beautiful '59, though. .
I think you guys have started a new trend I want in on..................... whats say I find a 40 Ford 4dr and we chop it up too!.................................? I might be able to find a 30 A 4dr.........
I parted out a '56 Bel Air 4 door a few years ago. The top was made into cruiser skirts, the rear sheet metal was made into a couch (brought $3500.00 bucks when done!) all the front sheet metal, floor pan, dash, glass, doors all went to various '56 chevys. Somebody bought the frame because it was one of the more desirable ones (whats that mean? I don't have a clue.) I still have the title!!!
