Unfinished Nationals, are we choppin a top?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 29EHV8, Aug 15, 2004.

  1. First off,whos attendin?Howsa bout a rollcall.
Second,Glen and Kathy who put on the show gave me the ok to get some guys together and chop a top while the show is on.
I mentioned this to Jkustom and he said we could chop his top if he hadn't done it by then.Well we all know he works 24/7 so I don't think hes done it.
60s Style(Paul) said hes into jumpin in and cuttin etc.I chatted with K-member and ol'beet and they said they're in too.
So whos else is into helpin?
J are we wackin your car or what?
I can't really bring tools over the boarder w/o a hassle so K-member offered to bring some along.Who else can bring what?
I'll donate some zippycuts and grindin discs.
J,if were doing your car can you organize the tools?
Glen and Kathy want to know if we wanna wack the roof on a 48 F-1 but I'd rather do a HAMBers.
    So whos into gettin dirty?
And whos coming to the show?.....Shiny

    when is it again?

Justin's car an early fifties Chevy 2 door aint it?

can someone post a picture of the car?

I can bring my mig welder if there's 220, plasma if there's 220 and air, a torch (or two if needed), grinders, sawsalls, jigsaws, hacksaws, hammers, dollys, whatever..

plenty for me and another, or two..

I can only be there Saturday, so someone else will have to bring stuff for Sunday.

it'll mean leaving the coupe at home,

may bring the T on a trailer..

Shoot, I dont even know if I have any pics of the car.....But its a 54 chevy 2 door sledan. It has the wraparound back glass, but I have the entire roof and back window from a 52 deluxe.

There has to be one or two pics floating around.

It will be close, but I think I can have it on the road by then. And if not, I'll put that bitch on a tow dolly and get it there. It aint called the "unfinished nationals" for nothing!

But really, it should be going by then.

Me, beetle and K-member were talking about this just last night at the pig run as a matter of fact.

    Lets chop my POS!

Hey Shiny, I'll be there. For all of you who don't know me but most of you do; This is Marty from NW Speed. I have chopped better than 20 shoebox fords and Chevs. This is a lot of work for a weekend and will require an english wheel for the sail panels. If you guys really want to do this and pull it off with class. Call me at the shop and we can plan it all out ahead of time.

  19. Marty, you plannin it out sounds good to me.I'll just weld the fucker back together! [IMG]
I don't think were gonna get it done but J will be well on his way to getting K-member to finish it up later [IMG]

I've got a small english wheel and shot bag I could bring.

maybe Marty could show us how they work, I 'aint never even used them [IMG]

I'm thinking this is a cut, fit, tack job with the car still needing some finishing by the end of it.

I think it is imperative that Justin (you Justin) knows the style and look we are going for,

the rake of the rear glass, sloped "B" pillar? etc.

show early Saturday, make a quick detailed plan and have all parts, materials and tools to pull it off.

a half dozen guys that know what they are doing should have no problem cutting, dropping and tacking the top in one day.

the second day should only take a couple three guys to weld it all up

and send it home needing only minor work to get it ready for filler and glass.

..would be really cool to fit a windshield in it too..

I plan to set up my booth again so I will bring my specialized tools that I like to have. I can cut it and tack it back togehter in about 2 hrs. I'll build the sail panels and fit the back window. The rest will be grinding and finsh welding. We always sandblast the windshield to cut it. That's beetles department.

yeah I have it in my head how I want it to look, and I will be bringing down some pics of cars that I like the roof lines of... dose anyone have anyother pics handy to post?

The goal (at least my goal) is to have the car tacked up, hopefully a windsheild in a place, and able to be driven home afterwards, finish work will come later. I'll put the coffins on it [IMG].

Thanks for all the help fellas, Im looking forward to learning a lot...from all of you.

    cool justin,

I have only really done two chops myself, neither a '54 Chev, and look forward to working with someone as experienced as Marty.

we should pass around a list of what we can bring and what we think we might need.

I can bring the stuff I listed above but there will be a lot more little stuff that will be essential.

    I plan to be there.

Never done a chop but will be willing to get dirty helping out. Not sure what I should bring that others haven't already offered, but I'll check back just in case.

Where will the work be done? Inside the building where the venders were last year? Out in the grass somewhere? And how early should I arrive?

Last year the tech offerings weren't very strong. I think they had trouble getting people to come because of the change in location. I think the promoters will benefit a lot from a chop being performed on site so don't be hesitant to ask for help on things like power...
