Update: I found that the pitman arm wasn't seated fully on the shaft with the nut tightened (too thin?). The shaft was turning, the arm wasn't. A couple of big flat washers ensured the arm is now snug on the splines, all's well after 400 miles. I'm looking for a GM Vega box or a Borgeson, but it's tight as the bark on a tree for now.

So what I'm hearing here is that there was nut loose behind the wheel?

  3. Add a steering stabilizer and the play won't matter, auto parts sell one for F100 Ford trucks that will work or VW. You need a little wobble in your steering when you're past 70 yrs old to keep you focused on the road, that and Rayban shades to play it cool while you're steering. JW
