This may be a dumb question, but why would the shells be crushed? I'm assuming that they only retagged the works in progress, not the shells waiting restoration (I could be wrong).

They had some really neat cars out back when I went through for a shop tour. Couple of old drag cars and a flared out 70's relic among others, and several Mopars. It would be a shame if they ALL got crushed...

Sorry Dave I will call you stupid if you don't know or care about your own money. Pre-occupied with making a living? Give me a fucking break. It's YOUR money, YOUR living. A person needs to be "pre-occupied" with their finances, THAT'S life. It's obvious he's young and perhaps whoever signed him up, or was guiding him through the paperwork didn't bring all the important facts to life BUT the point is to learn from each other. Hence the reason I even commented so OTHERS might think, hey, I'm going to watch my 401K account so my employer doesn't screw me over. Stick your head in the sand Dave, no problem BUT let the rest of the HAMB learn from each other.

He's probably NOT going to get a W-2 at the end of the year either. Kinda hard to do your taxes without it especially if he didn't keep his check stubs. The kid, and the others, need to talk to a professional so they can get their finances straightened out. Of course he'll also need to start looking for his tool receipts so he can claim those when the feds are ready to turn the personal property back over to the employees.

Also, not all of my previous reply was meant for you Dave, I was just giving folks food for thought, what to watch out for IF they think that something is shady in their work place.

    I am a little confused.
We are all car people. I feel bad for the people who got ripped off. I am building my first car and I have recieved a ton of help from people just being nice. I am not into muscle cars but I know they love their cars as much as I love my 5 window. Because we get so emmotional about our rods, we sometimes make some bad decisions on how we spend some of our money.

I wish all the best to those who have been taken. I hope it never happens to me.

  15. I want some of these "emotional" types to come into my shop! Who the hell just up and gives a shop the full amount up-front for a project and waits two years for some type of progress? These people that are able to do this must be able to piss nickels because most of my potential customers absoulutely flip out when I tell them what it takes to build their "dream ride". They look at me like I just raped their whole family when I give them an estimate for the work involved. It seem as if it is news to them that a show worthy vehicle can't be built in a week for next to free like on TV.
Someone please direct these people with bottomless pockets to my shop!.............

From the Dallas Morning News 11/7/07

Police have confiscated more than 60 vehicles as part of a criminal investigation into a well-known custom car manufacturer based in Farmers Branch.

No charges have been filed against the owners of Unique Performance, but police allege the company has been altering vehicle identification numbers on customized cars that sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Police say the company uses frames from limited-edition vehicles – mostly Mustangs from the 1960s – to build its custom versions. But the titles on many of those frames have been deemed "salvage," meaning the car has been declared a total loss, police Cpl. Chad Taylor said.

That categorization alone severely lowers the value of the vehicle, Cpl. Taylor said. Police allege that in order to hide the salvage status, the company swapped VINs from similar model cars that didn't have salvage titles.

"What we believe they're doing is purchasing a Mustang of the same year, buying Mustangs around the same year that don't have salvage titles" and replacing the VINs on the cars that had salvage titles, Cpl. Taylor said.

Officials with Unique Performance could not be reached for comment Monday night.

According to the company's Web site, Unique Performance "builds small volumes of handcrafted, limited production vehicles ranging from vintage Shelbys and Camaros to a custom version of the current Ford Mustang."

Police confiscated 61 vehicles from two Unique Performance facilities in Farmers Branch, two in Dallas and one in Grayson County, Cpl. Taylor said. The vehicles are being kept at a storage facility in Carrollton, he said.

Cpl. Taylor said charges are likely, though the investigation is still in the early stages.

"We don't have any charges on anybody as of yet just because the vast amount of evidence we have," Cpl. Taylor said. "Pretty much time is on our side now. We believe we have most or all of the cars. We can kind of sit back and look at what we have."

Charges against the company could include placement of serial number with intent to change identity, a third-degree felony, he said.

Wow, I was just thinking - how can I get my hands on $250,000 so that I can send it to someone I don't know for a rebuilt 40 year old car. I'm sure glad I learned about this before I went ahead!

I hope those crooks get locked up with OJ.

who on earth would give a shit if has a salvage title? it's going to be obvious what the car is (or what was supposed to be), a complete re-build or re-body. if unique had 2 identical cars, one with a 'clean' title and one with a salvage title, do you think there would be any difference in the selling price?

YES, some states won't let you register a "salvage" title.

3rd degree felonies??? OUCH! they deserve every day in jail though.

it's hard enough to find a good custom shop these days, and then one of the big names in Dallas goes down for s**t like this? what a shame. it's hard to trust anyone these days

  25. Florida won't let you register a salvage either. I'm surprised they don't just wash the titles through another state - like, set up a dealer office in New York and just register them here - it's not the most honest practice, but it's a little less dishonest than swapping tags.

Of course for all we know a couple tags got swapped by accident because they all look the same when they're done and that's what started all this.

After the car is repaired the law must come out and verify the numbers on the frame, trans and engine match the title. They sign a release and you take it to the Secratary of State's office and they issue a "formerly salvage title"
Just did this with my son's truck we bought from Cal....

Wow, this is amazing. I had a guy apply with me that was working for them. He decided to stay there rather than move because his girlfriend lived there and was unwilling to move. He was a nice guy. Hope he got out before all this and isn't tied up in it. He mentioned to me that they couldn't get welding gas because they owed the supply house so much money. That was a year ago!

If there is anything that can be gotten from this story, is to pick your job based on ethics. If the boss can't get through the day without lying to the customers, or lying to the employees, then taking money even though you know he is a pimp, is where you have just joined the mass ranks of whores in America.
