What's the latest on this...lot of speculation, opinions, but some have come forward with "damning" facts that could come out in court if they get called in to testify(Former employees-customers). ???

the reason shops do this is because theres for one a large amount of money in parts just to get a job started ,these jobs take along time mechanics/venders dont wait until job is done to get paid ...we have had to sell more than a few jeeps cause the owner either couldnt finish the project or ran out of money....what ever happened we where left holding the bag....i dont blame any shop that wants cash up front!!!

I've been around a million shops. The best, most organized I ever saw was John Balow's Muscle Car Restorations. He takes a deposit to get the car started. This buys the initial parts and materials needed, pays for the guys to completely disassemble the car, chemical stripping, etc. His guys go to the computer and clock in on every job they do, so the job (and his hours) are assigned specifically to that car. When they go to the materials room, they clock into the computer and register what they're taking, and for what car (Bob's Fury, 3 sheets of 80-grit, 1 green scotch brite, 3 Roloc discs), and it gets billed to the customer. Every week, a tally is done for hours and material on the car. I don't know if the customer is given a weekly bill, or a monthly bill (probably monthly). The bill goes out, the check comes in, the work continues until the car is finished. Every job on the car has several pictures taken as well, and with the bill, a bundle of photos goes with it, so the customer sees the progress being made on his car.
If the bill goes out and no check comes in, the car is rolled out of the shop and into storage, and another customer's car rolls in. And with the waiting list, you probably don't want to be bumped to the bottom of the line.

It's and expensive shop, but the customers and the shop both know up front what the deal is. His shop puts out some of the best work I've ever seen, so it's worth it.

When the car is done, Balow loads it into an enclosed trailer, and delivers it to the customer's house, no matter where it is in the country. Nice touch.

THAT'S the way to run a shop.

I doubt any of those mustangs were actually stolen cars. In KS we have VIN inspections on cars bought from out of state or vehicles sold on bill of sale. If you don't have 2 of the 3 main VIN numbers they will impound your car and treat it as a stolen car.

It seems like there are a lot of shops that end this way. Maybe they'll make a example out of these guys and save some people some money in the future.
