Technical Unleaded gas will eventually get a leaded gas motor

Oh, well yeah Seafoam won't fix that missing chunk out of the exhaust valve.

 

I was hoping it was just carboned up and I do not think I ran it long enough to hurt the seat,I do have a fresh set of 66 289 heads that might go in but will need to find pushrods. Original heads going to machine shop monday morning for estimate.

 

Got some bad news from the machine shop,the heads need all new intake guides and valves plus the one exhaust valve and will be about 500 to fix. Was told the quality of the material of the valves was not that great at that time and all the big three were the same so thinking about the later E7 heads,he must be right since I have put over 200,000 miles on the newer heads with no problems so I need to make a decision soon.

 

Since I heard the steam holes are in different locations on the later heads I am having the original heads repaired,do not want to spend the money but other then the worn valves and guides I know the heads are not cracked.

 

Motor is back togather and running good,had a little scare when a rocker arm came off and a dead miss appeared and so glad it was nothing serious. This motor only had a little over 16,000 original miles when it was installed but always had what sounded like a lifter tick even after the lifters were replaced,since all intake valves and guides were replaced it either had a bad guide from the factory or a intake valve bent from being stuck when it was fired up after sitting 30 years and idles much smoother then it ever did. This time I made sure the intake gaskets matched the ports.

 

Had a '71 F100 3 on the tree 240 six burn 2 exhaust valves in '80 with only 18k miles on the truck. Put new seals, new guides , new seats and exhaust valves. Cost me $550 in 1980. I replaced a stripped Fiber timing cam gear myself in '88. Other than playing with the points every winter I had zero engine problems. Original water pump, starter, alternator, carb, distributor and clutch. Only changed points, plugs and brakes. I sold it to a buddy in 1999. Had 155K and more rust and air gaps than sheet metal by then.

 

My '72 Ford 302 sunk an exhaust seat in 1/4". Put some '80s heads on it from the boneyard, still going. Bigger chambers though.

 

The machinist must not have been lying when he said the metals in those era of heads was not that great,just remembered I had a 70 351-W 30 years ago that sunk a exhaust valve deep in the head and that valve job did not last very long as with in about 4000 miles had to do it again and replace all but the one exhaust valve that was replaced the first time. Sold the 64 galaxie it was in a few years later and the bottom end was getting tired since it had about 200,000 miles on it..

 

It has the late 80s truck shorty headers so the usual square port header gaskets will not seal and no one has any oval port gaskets but they will be here tomorrow. Do not want to run fresh heads with exhaust leaks.
