STUPID QUESTION! Just bought some Cherry Bombs(2-1/2" shorty's) for my Coupe. I know....WHY? lol. After doing the Pasadena Reliability Run, which was about a 200 mile day, my ears were ringing for two days. The question....they aren't marked in or out!!! There's some cupping inside(open one way and closed the other way. My guess is, the open cups are the inlet, which would catch the exhaust to muffle it. Gone down this road before when i put some Smithys on it and hated it. So, lets just get the sarcasm and jokes out of the way....Never had these before. HELP!!!
you can use em either way. here is an old thread on it https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/glasspack-flow-direction.560534/
I used those same ones in my bus. Exited just past the drivers seat. Echoed badly loud loud loud ears ring non stop anyway
Nothing wrong with running the glass packs… There aren’t many things you can do to a car that are less cool than tinnitus. The website says “reversible design for installation flexibility”, whatever that means
If the louvers (cups) are facing the exhaust flow, they are quieter. If they are away from the flow, louder. They are loud both ways IMO. We need a decibel thread with audio. That would be a great HAMB add.
I assume, cups facing the inlet would be quieter. I'm putting larger pipe also. Think i'll tack them on and see which way sounds better. Now....I'll read the thread Moriority linked....dig deeper.
since they don't really do much muffling anyways, it doesn't matter which way you put them, they still won't do much muffling.
I did something similar to an El Camino I owned years ago, but I didn't install them. Just told the guy what I wanted. The plan... New 2-1/2" pipe, Cherry Bombs, then 3" turn downs. Sounded great. We shall see... Thanks for the input. Live to hear another day!
glass packs are nostalgic, and loved back in the day because of the only other option were factory stock (quiet) mufflers. not the many options offered today. had a chopped '54 that had glass packs with all "glass" blown out. it was knick named "La Bomba", or The Evil One - Ha!
I love glass packs or steel packs.....shorter the better but they will blow out quickly. They make cans like porters. https://cherrybomb.com/cherry-bomb-hot-rod/
Right now, they drop off in front of the rear wheels. the glasspaks will be right at the firewall. The turndowns will be at the same place. This could all change, of course, lol. I want to shorten it up.
62 years of personal experience says that no matter what you have for mufflers getting the exhaust to exit out past the rear tires makes road trips a lot more enjoyable. Back in the mid 70's I ran thrush side pipes on my 48 thinking that it was the hot lick and did get tons of compliments on how great it sounded even over the CB but that setup wore on you on road trips including 5 days on the road towing a 16 ft Uhaul from Texas to Washington in 1977. At the time it was a 65 dollar exhaust setup when I didn't have a bunch of spending money. I used to sell those Cherry bombs when I worked at Boden's Auto parts in the 90's and we kept them in a barrel at the end of one of the aisles in the store. Under 15 bucks each if I remember right.
Bob, this probably doesn't help, but, had a pair of Walker glass packs on my OT 69 Nova. This was in the late 70's, nasty blown SBC. They were the best sounding back then. Loud when you jumped on it , but kept the police at bay .
The only scientific way to know for sure is to hold them up to your lips and go vroooommmmmbaaaaaa a few times. Whichever way sounds the coolest is right. Always glad to help, -Abone.
