Unwrapped the Jimmillac today

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Cadillacin Marcus, Jan 12, 2004.

  1. Well the rain has stopped and I thought I would unwrap the the old beast.I have a car cover plus a big ole blue tarp over it and bunji cords holdin it down.It was a chore just to uncover it.Opened the hood removed the towels and blankets I have over the ole Caddy and well I wasn't to surprised to find that all my chrome plating is rapidly deteriorating.I have yet to light this ****er up yet too, right now its just a very very expensive show piece(Engine that is) that lives outside under a hood and tarps! I really need a good polish to see if I can save this chrome,I can't afford to do it again. And I look at the 2x4 intake with AFBs on it and wish I would have kept one of the 4x2 intakes like the Edelbrock.I also need to get a longer fan spacer its way too far from the radiator. And also the more I look at the 58 Biscayne tailights the more I think I can come up with something a little more creative.Right now they are mounted in the roll pan not frenched or canted.I'm thinking like 59 Poncho tailights would be the **** if I could find them.

Oh and I'm looking for some things like... a 64-66 Chevy hood,55 Pontiac split bumpers, and the most important a 59 Chevy junker or just the fins if thats possible. And that Cal Custom stuff I posted in the cl***ifieds. The Cal Custom collection I had was taken from me.I need louvered air cleaners, wire looms with white or blue grommets,Rajah terminals 90's.Oil cap chrome for 49-up Cads..and blue clear plug wire...Not asking for much right? oh yeah and one more thing a loan for about $10,000...I'll pay you on the first....the first chance i get...either that or when my huntchback brother straightens up...hehehe

I use this stuff that I got at the parts store a few years back...comes in a white bottle shaped kinda like a plastic brake fluid bottle with a small, screw-on cap.

I think it's called "No.7"...it's a kind of soupy brownish liquid that ya rub on with a damp rag and then polish off with a dry one after it dries...works REAL good on lightly rusted chrome...brings it right back!

This is what works best for me, Wheel Acid. If you know someone who works at a auto detailing shop they will know what you are talking about & can get it for you. WEAR RUBBER GLOVES! spray or pour a litte acid over the chrome part to be cleaned and lightly rub over the surface with very fine #000 steel wool then immediatley wash the part with plenty of water.DON'T pour the acid on the steel wool and rub the chrome. This method will bring back some seemingly hopeless chrome to at least driver quality. It works alot faster than rubbing your balls off with semichrome polish or whatever and the results are better also.

Before you put your car away for storage for winter or whatever, put a coat of wax on all chrome parts to prevent rust.

Just what I was going to say. Chrome plating is porous and needs to be sealed. Best way to do that is with a good quality Carnauba wax.

I've restored a few old Schwinn crusiers and brought back some seriously rusted chrome with Mothers and '0000' steel wool.
    Works great.
