Hot Rods Up in smoke ~ Hot Rod burnouts

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Feb 15, 2020.

  1. Great place to enjoy a “fast car” is the drag strip. May not be as fast as one thinks.

Burnouts with the vehicle stationary to impress the pedestrians is just like that old saying about chrome...

Every time I try to burn a little rubber traffic shows up; or even thinking about it will cause a cop to appear...

  4. I just bought some new tires. They were expensive! Darned if I'm going to wear them out making smoke.

I refrain from doing burnouts on the street, as too risky. Might lose control and damage somebody's property, or at the least get a ticket. But at the drags I'm all for it! This picture was posted after one of our old time drag events locally. It's my Austin gasser.

Let's face it............if everyone on the Hamb never got the urge to try their hot rod out, and then did it.......there would be no reason to build hot rods. Sure, the world has changed and there are more cars on the roads and cars capable of higher speeds and much faster acceleration...........but anyone who believes that someone is going to spend years of their time and gobs of their money to build a hot rod..........and then never drive it like its a hot rod is outta touch with reality. Sure there are a few who proclaim absolution.......but they lie:p You just have to pick your moments....then nail it:cool:

Oh when I do burnouts, it’s usually not in my hamb friendly cars. I have something a little newer and stronger.

In 62 years of driving I’ve never done a “burn out” and still do not have the desire. A few dry hops from in front of the water box at the drags was it.
I’ve never done donuts on dirt, gravel or in the street and cannot see it’s thrill. All a waste of tires and hard on equipment I must pay for.

Basically I agree with what you said. There is a difference between warming your tires a little to help get them to grip, or maybe someone punches the gas and lays a little stripe just to show off their car..........and the tire scalding smoke exhibitions that accomplish nothing. At todays tire prices, most of them won't be doing it as often.
On the opposite end of the scale, an awful lot of people today seem to be building
"HOT" rods with little to no performance built in. Many are incapable of generating even a modicum of tire spin during acceleration. Personally I like the look of your Avataur. The wheels hint at performance. One of my favorite cars as a kid was a plain jane 54 Ford coupe. Bluish green color they came in. Had either a 352 or a 390 in it with a 4 speed. Lots can be done simply to make a car look fast......but once in a while its nice to show what it can do when needed.

Smart guy ya in the driveway they can't measure your burnouts then knock on your door and show you how your tread matches and write you up for ticket worthy ' By The Foot ' and after the third offense you get to see the judge . For us , well he took our money he would tell us we can't ever go out with his daughter . 2 years later she ran away from home with hippies . Eereggh !!! She been better off with us Hot Rodders !

I don’t want to spend the money on tires and such to do any real burn outs. But I think that occasionally squealing your tires is traditional, so heck yes I do it.

  17. Everyone uses costs of tires as an excuse...

For $24 dollars I got 2 tires and rims from the local u-pull it and have way more than $24 dollars worth of fun

I do have one that I take to the drags, where smoking the tires is just part of the process and fun
