will try to piece together the other side's tubes this weekend before welding all tubes to thier flanges and collectors
Performance Radiator called back with an estimate for the custom radiator this car needs... holy shit! about twice what the last all custom one I had them build cost..
The dash and header both look great!! If you don't mind sharing, what steps did you go through to weld/grind/finish the header tubes so nicely? Malcolm
align the two tubes using whatever means you have fitment of course has to be near perfect tack with mig weld with tig carefully grind down weld to very near parent metal hand file to flush medium grit paper disc on 4" grinder to clean the file marks DA with medium grit, I think I used 180? and finally hand sand to take those marks out it actually goes faster than it sounds again biggest part is getting the pieces to fit nice to begin with I'll try to take more pictures on the second set
thanks, looks like you have pretty cool car yourself I very nearly went with a 4-71 blown small block in mine too but when the parts came together to put an Olds in it I had no choice
on to the second side, clamped a short length of small channel in the vice layed two pieces to be joined in it and tacked them together in three places welded each tube up grind and file hit them with the little disc sander
followed by the DA sander tape, clamp and prop the tubes in place tack them to the sarter tubes and tack the ends together compare to the first side
Those headers are bitchin! Are you going to run a block off plate and full exhaust or are you gonna go balls out?
'going to make some block off plates and outlet drops to run the exhaust under the car, through mufflers out the back... I think
Paul, Your "A" is going to be one mean "A" Coupe ! I have a '31 "A" Coupe with a '57 Ford Marine Y-Block. It is adapted to a '46 Ford truck trans and the rear is a '41 Ford car. Car is mostly figured out but needs finishing. Will be building a stand alone water pump for cooling. Hope my "A" is 1/2 as cool as yours. Dave
sounds pretty cool to me, makes me think of the pink? one Marshall built a little while ago I really like the way the Y blocks look somebody once said they go pretty good too
welded the primaries to the starter tubes, pinched the tubes together where they meet inside the collector welded them together and about an inch or so up the tubes tacked the collector in place to check alignment back to the bench to weld the collector on solid then bolt back on one last time that's as far as I'll take this side for now, stopped to take the turkey out of the oven start the cranberry sauce then it's back out to the shop to put the other collector on
Paul, I am also building a '41 Fordor with a Y-Block. Hope to have it all dolled out with T-Bird valve covers and 3 carb intake. Hope to be able to make it a Kustom. Chopped 2 inches, sectioned 2 inches and channelled 2 inches. Just got to do some wheeling and dealing. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Dave
I've only heard it on the test stand through mufflers and that was way too long ago I'm sure it will sound a bit different now
The picture you posted of your pickup in one of the header picture threads, meaty beaty big and bouncy, was an inspiration Count on it.
picked up the radiator from the shop yesterday I had them build it without brackets so I could not only save a few bucks but I wanted to make sure to get them so they fit the way I want them to. started on that today, bent up a strap to go under the bottom tank tacked the upper shell brackets in place and got a plan for the lower brackets. but I may need to modify the cross member to get the whole thing a bit lower..
took the week between Christmas and New Years off, between chores I did manage to spend some time on the Coupe in an earlier mock-up I had tunneled a small block Chevy into the firewall, now that needed to be fixed. I found a crusty but solid donor firewall somewhere in the past figured it would be just as easy to patch the original as replace the whole thing so I did a rough layout of the patch needed and cut it with the trusty little grinder with cut off wheels clamped it behind the original and marked it for trimming and welded the lower half in, I intended to cut the center out for magneto clearance but left it in one piece to help with initial patch alignment when the sides were welded in solid enough I cut the center section out
bent up a recess out of similar gauge steel tacked it in and trimmed it a bit pounded out a bit of a dome to fill the top of the recess and welded that in fit the remaining patches using new steel worked it into shape with hammer and dolly and stripped the paint and rust while the tank was off I cut the top free and set the body back on the chassis the engine just clears the remaining firewall, plenty of room for the plug wires and just enough room to pull the magneto slowly coming together that's all for now folks!
