Sorry I havent posted an update, been busy as hell. Saturday my Dad came to town and helped get started on the wiring. Got gauge lights, license plate light, front park lights and blinkers. Then today I got alot of help from A Rodder he got me going on finishing all the wiring, he came by a second time to fix my problem and of course he schooled me in under five minutes and then Hailees cousin came by to hangout. http://s547.photobucket.com/user/53oldsmobile/media/VID_20130707_202409_zps721cd4c6.mp4.html All thats left is to get a voltage regulator for the gauges, need a new fuel gauge and get a new brake light switch and mount it behind the pedal.
Jon, This is a really killer little truck. It is refreshing to see younger guys and gals into this hobby. Thanks for sharing your whole journey with us!!!
Glad to see you got it going! I remember seeing it when you first started the first build thread. I'd love check it out. I'll be moving up to Eugene this fall. Keep up the great work!
Brake light switch in, working on hooking up temp gauge..local car show and cruise this friday and saturday
This past weekend was a blast. Put the truck in it's first show and shine and cruise.. here's some pics. Also discovered my water pump is going out so I'm gonna try and replace that this week. Then might do another local car show this coming weekend and then the following monday I start a job working with my mom. http://s547.photobucket.com/user/53oldsmobile/library/Springfield Cruz 2013 This was the friday night hangout Show and Shine and the cruise
Its awesome huh! Be honest the best part is the cruise right! Trucks looking good! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Yes the cruise was alot better even though I only got to take two laps..long story about that but it was better because it had cooled off and the cars were more spaced out. So my truck with no temp gauge and going bad water pump did just fine and made it home.
Well I took the 59 down to a local friday night hangout..gonna remove old water pump tomorrow or sunday and also need to figure out why it looked as if one of my freeze plugs was leaking..
Might wanna change all the freeze plugs, no telling whats behind 'em. Since you gotta drain the coolant out anyway it might be good idea to do the whole thing.
Later on Saturday I got a new pump for $20 and went home and got everything put back on and took for a test drive! http://s547.photobucket.com/user/53oldsmobile/media/VID_20130727_174521_zpsb978cf75.mp4.html
Have not done a single thing to it but sit and stare at it..cruised it around a few weeks ago. There is a local car show going on tomorrow, just not sure if I want to go. I started a job this week working with my mom and I'm exhausted..
I can understand a Prius owner being too tired to take their car to a car show, but not some dude with a cool '59 Fridge...okay Jon, I'm just busting your chops. If you got that water pump issue fixed that truck needs to be at the show!
Yeah, I just always get nervous driving it. no matter how close. I always am thinking of the worst..ughh
That feeleing doesn't go away when you're just getting a project on the road! At least not for me. Every time I make a change on a project it takes me about 6 months to feel like I can just jump in and go with being a little nervous! But nothing feels better than pulling back in the garage without a hiccup!
I don't think that ever goes away. Best bet is to own more than 1 so if it does break, you have a back-up. Nice truck. I drove one for 12 years all over the country. Conor
Looks good! Now get some miles on that thang! In 1993 I took my '56 F100 (see avatar) down to the bare frame, completely rebuilt it, went through the .060 over 292, new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, changed transmissions and installed a 9" rear end with 3.73s, front hubs, new dropped front springs, brakes, rewired from scratch. Basically a shitload of potential problems that could crop up. I too was less than comfortable with driving it too far until it had some miles on it, but after a couple of 30 mile round trips I felt a bit better. Then my buddy called me from western Virginia, (I lived in Portsmouth, near the coast, at the time) and asked me to come and get him. He'd gotten a killer deal on a car and needed to get down to Portsmouth asap. I said to hell with it, drove 3-1/2 hours out to western Va, picked him up and drove back. The truck never missed a beat and became my daily driver. In 1996 I swapped cabs, installed a fiberglass front clip and built a .030 over 1970 429 to hook up to the used toploader 4 speed that I bought. Lots more new parts too. Basically another shitload of potential problems again. The motor had 141 miles on it and I was keeping my fingers crossed about the 4 speed when I left Portsmouth for San Diego. My avatar shows it in North Carolina that day with about 400 miles on it. Note the U-Haul trailer. I made it in six days after cooking a starter near Wakeeney Kansas and burning out a couple of header collector gaskets. Man what fun it was! Got lotsa thumbs up all the way across the country too. Bottom line; you gotta have confidence in your work, and the more you drive your truck the more confidence in it you'll have. Sounds like you need to do a road trip young man!!
53 olds, what size wheels are you running? Also was that front bumper (57/58?) a direct bolt on, or did you have to do any mods? Truck looks great man!
The front bumper looks just like the factory bumper on my 57' but in chrome instead of paint. Love the truck!
