Maybe… but keep in mind I tend to come on here in little bits when I have a bit of time to kill in between something else I’m doing and I type very fast so it takes little time for me to post anything. I’ve enjoyed the learning and getting perspective vs just reading articles and old threads and even though this truck isn’t worth its weight… it’s separated by a gap of 18 inches with a chopped and bagged 1950 ford shoebox with a sbc 350 motor in it as well that I totally would apply any knowledge I gain as that car is worth putting money into it…

When working/modifying an older vehicle/engine, you have 4 good, personal friends:

    (1) understanding of mathematics
    (2) understanding of physics
    (3) PATIENCE!
    (4) MONEY!

The more of numbers 1 and 2, followed by number 3, will reduce the amount of number 4 required!

It is now running, enjoy it!

If you truly want a 4-barrel, patiently look around for a stock cast iron 4-barrel intake that interchanges with your cylinder heads (sorry, cannot help with the interchange).

A stock 1975 cast iron 4 barrel intake is worth a lot less than the cost of shipping, thus you probably will not see them on the internet; but locally, should be able to find one.

While a stock 4 barrel carb for 1975 MIGHT be worth more than the shipping costs, it would be just barely.

As you and others have posted, you won't gain a lot of power; but you should see a modest increase. What you will gain is driveability, and economy! Once you rebuild the Q-Jet and get it on, driving in a reasonablely sane manner should net you a significant increase in fuel economy. Is it enough to pay for itself? In this instance, probably.

And if you do acquire a Q-Jet, even before ordering a rebuilding kit, acquire a copy of the Q-Jet book written by Cliff Ruggles. In more than 60 years of working on carburetors, I have read 100's of books on carburetors; Cliff's book is the number one book as far as user friendliness, and in the top 5 in content. Read the book from cover to cover TWICE, then order the kit!

Thanks so much! I'll finish the timing set and enjoy as is for some time. It just makes me mad someone would strip the 4bbl setup that was already on there but that person probably wanted it for another engine. I paid next to nothing for this truck ($2500 in 2017) and have had fun with it without putting much money into it so I already got my money out of this thing if I drove it off a cliff right now.

Higher fuel efficiency might actually be a bad thing for me as I'll have more fuel to burn through that might be sitting in the tank for a month or so.. I don't like driving too far with the way people drive around here so 150 miles total per year is typical. I'll keep all of what you said in mind if I do anything else in the future. I have enjoyed learning a lot and thanks for sharing your wisdom!

  6. They probably didn't "strip" the intake and 4 bbl off for any reason, other than they may not have bought a complete engine for the truck, or they wanted to use the original type set up that came with the year truck they were fixing. I've done the same thing on my stuff in the past.

Hmmm could be... someone at some point took off the 4bbl intake and carb... maybe they were selling the engine as parts and just the intake/carb got bought by someone.
