Considering doing upholstered running boards on our 32 roadster . Looking for advice. Who’s done them ? How’d they hold up? Was the material just glued to the running board? I realize we probably won’t be able to step on them but we don’t anyway, and probably have to replace them every few years. Let me know your experience. pictures? Thanks Gary
I found in some show cars with custom looking interiors links full fuzzy door panels had snaps built into the panels. So they were removable for show. I know on a hotrod there might not be space or even a trunk. But you can consider snap in pieces that are covers for shows. Some of the guys with the underside wheel well tuck and roll seems to have a set up like.
My 34 truck has had upholstered running boards. They are snapped in place and look cool but with a chrome boards I don’t use them much. They get dirty fast because they are white and pleated.
Only for shows, inplace with snaps, under was rubber floor runner, cut too shape an glued down,is the way I saw some in bthe 50s,n60s
These running boards were upholstered in the early 80's, that picture was a two or three years ago, they have aged but don't look bad The car was a daily Iowa driver for about five years back in the 80's, then parked (a long ugly story) until I put it back on the road over ten years ago. They are affixed to a piece of one inch lumber that was painted, the covers are just tacked over the wood.
Someone I know put white tuck&roll on abs plastic sheet and attached them to the running board with trim clips. This was an A with flat boards. Easy to take off and clean as needed. If I was going to do it on a '32, I would heat and roll the abs over the outside edge of the board and use the same trim clips to hold it on. Off course you wouldn't want to drill holes in a good running board.
