I have fitted some chopped around DC3 seats into my Modified and I'm now getting ready to upholster them. The bases are easy - I have some 1.25" high density foam that will be wrapped in black tuck and roll and will clip on to the squab frame using lift the dot fasteners. The backs are more problematical. I have the original cushion pad and the clip-on leather cover which I will use for longer journeys. What I'd like to do for short runs is to fit mushroom shaped "****ons" into the 8 swaged holes in each backrest. They would be just pushed in and could be pulled out again when I want to fit the proper cushion. Any suggestions on materials and construction from upholstery guys would be appreciated.
Easiest would be to make a slip on cover with tuck and roll to match the cushion. Pull it down and secure with a draw string or snaps along the bottom. Keep it simple.
Not sure if I fully understand what you are trying to accomplish. Are you looking for padded inserts for the holes on the back that will sit proud of the rest of the back to provide some cushioning or just something upholstered to fill the holes when the cushion is not on the seat?
I would use high density foam and make a mushroom then when I covered it I would make a little flap on the back side that attached with something like Velcro or pehaps 3 or 4 tonneau snaps.
You could just make the foam slightly over sized for each "mushroom" and have them friction fit. or Have each "mushroom" be 2 piece, with a head and a base plate on the back side, you can have them snap fit, or bolt together Or Have all the "mushrooms" attach to a panel on the back side of the seat, this way the panel is held onto the seat by the mushrooms and vice versa
Neat idea on the "mushrooms", but it looks like the down low ones would not support the "small" of your back. Down low, your back would just be catching the edges of the "shrooms", .............Unless you are in the 350-400 pound range..........
