Upholstry

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by Pist-n-Broke, Dec 7, 2003.

  1. I have this piece that's been parked since 1971. The upholstry in it is way primo but is Vynal and stiff as a Sailers prommis. I'm afraid to sit on it for fear of it splitting or tearing at the seams. Anybody know of some Mothers Milk for this stuff? ( please don't say Armorall )It would be a shame to see it all turn to crap after surviving this long.

You are probably no going to save it, if it is really dry rotted. I have used a 3M Vinyl condition lotion and cleaned and softened some vinyl, but if it is too far gone, I afraid thats it...

  3. I am Will's wife. I was an upholsterer here in Maryland for 15 years and I have to tell you that even if you managed to somehow save the vinyl, you won't save the cotton backing. That has long since dry rotted. There are plenty of after market seat cover vendors who sell the replacements. If you know how to sew and have access to a walking foot machine, you can use your old one as a pattern.

Simply number each section and place sewing marks all over the seam areas. Make sure that they are randomly placed so you don't confuse the left and right sides of your project. Also, be sure to add sewing allowances.Upholsterers use a standard 3/8" sewing allowance. When you take the seat apart, make sure to cut right on the stitch lines. Then when you chalk out your new pieces, add 3/8" everywhere that you cut.

The reason that vinyl is backed by cotton is to aid in snug fitting when you're done. That's why the trimshop seat covers always fit so well. After you install the covers, then you go back with a steamer and insert the rod under the cover. It shrinks the backing and makes the covers conform beautifully.

Hope this makes sense. By the way, I'm Action Girl's mom and Flamed Coupe (Will) is her dad. Small world, huh?

  4. Wow! now that I've been introduced to the whole family I'm almost speechless. What time is dinner? Just kidding, I really do appriceate everyones input.
I kind of thought I was in trouble with this upholstry. It's a real shame. It's one of those cars if it's left alone it looks fine. Once you start any part of it you half to do it all. I don't want to go there. It's a maxi door long top and I will get it running again. I plan to drive it a while then sell it. Let's hope thet interior doesn't self destruct before the sighn goes up.
    Thanks again, The Wizzard
