Projects Upper control arm stripped thread

  1. Hi guys striping down front crossmember on my 49 chevy removed top control arm only to find threads stripped both ends is there an easy way to remove the shaft without the proper tool cheers ; trev

    Define 'proper tools'.;) Your talking about the bolts that attach the arm the shaft, right? Are you replacing the bushings? I'm assuming yes, so you'll probably have to cut the heads off the offending bolts, but you're going to need an air chisel(or air hammer) to drive the old bushings out. Then, if you're aim is good, drill out the stripped-out bolts and drill, tap, and install heli-coil thread inserts in the shaft. If you're lucky, try spinning the bolts and maybe apply pressure on the back side of the head of the bolts to get them out, then you won't have to drill them out. Then put in heli-coils.

    It's going to be a PITA if all you have is hand tools. Good luck.
     
  3. Hi j&jhotrods they are not bolts as such they are a threaded shaft that goes through the spring housing in my workshop book there is a tool that fits over the thread and then you use a spanner on it
