I just did the oil pan in my daily using "snap ups" they came in the fel-pro kit. Absolute life saver! I will never use gasket cement again!

just did "endlessearth's" pan on his flat head last week, and I used a Permatex aresol product for gaskets. To avoid spraying it all over hell I sprayed some into the cap and applied it to both the pan rail and the gasket with a small brush. Then just a schmeer of black Permatex Ultra seal GMS stuff on the pan.

I'm with you, Don. It sure ended all my leaks!

  7. Quick enough, the trick is to let it tac before you set the gasket. The permatex avation form a gasket (in the tube) will probably work better for you.

I use spray on hi-tack, never had any trouble and have done tons of them. The only place I use silicone on the pan is where block joins front or rear cover, etc... And only a little even then.

This is what I use^^^^^ We call it YELLOW DEATH. It sticks to stuff real good and you have to destroy the gasket to remove it.:D

Yes "gorilla snot". The yellow contact adhesive sold by 3M. It's been around since the 60s. I personally stock a tube of the black weather stripping cement. It does not stand out if you get sloppy and it also works on weather stripping :D. I usually glue the gasket to the part using the bolts to keep it all in line while you clean the mating surface and then it is held in place no matter how you swist and turn the part. The gasket does the sealing the cement just holds it in place until it is bolted up. RTV is overdone by most and in my opinion is not needed except in corners and other places where separate gasket meet but contact cement is the answer to your question.
