im looking to buy a rebuilt 2 speed powerglide with a shift kit,,,its a '65-66 aluminum 2 spd..i havent seen it in person yet..im looking to put it into my '62 pontiac[chevy 283,2 speed powerglide] that im running a cast iron 2 speed..my question is whats the differences..does the starter bolt to the*******?is the tail shaft any different....lemme know dudes,,,,thanks...craig
The starter bolts to the block on those....it's gonna screw ya if your block isn't drilled for a bolt-up starter.
I remember seeing a classic chevy international magazine offering a plate that mounted inbetween the******* and the block. It allowed you to use early 265 and 283 blocks with newer transmissions. You bolted up your starter to the plate. Dont know if thats how you wanna go, but it was out there as an option
Now that's a SMART thing to do, making sure it will work before the car is apart all over the driveway when you'd rather be driving... Thought the cast glides where long gone by 62? Props on sticking with the glide, I LOVE MINE had it gone through a few summers ago when I had the car all apart when I should have been on the road. Stopped and photoed this car for ya the other day, it's sitting in the alley behind Speedy autoglass @ 12th & kingsway...
wow, a short-nose Canadian Poncho... that thing's just cryin for a punched 455...I wonder what that car weighs. Gotta be somewhere in between what an American 62 Impala weighs and an American 62 Pontiac weighs... Maybe 3600-3800?
hahah cool pic,,thanks jason..i guess a road trip is in my future eh!!!!i love the whine of a 2 speed power glide,,and i love 'em too!!!ya rockey they are pretty much impalas..[in weight]except im my opinion way kooler...the canadian made ponchos are really kool lookin' cars and the x-frames are popular with lifed lowriders 'cause the frames are boxed and way stronger than the american ponchos for safety reasons...the early '60's pontiac stuff here is starting to get harder to find though..were as impala stuff is a dime a dozen...
Saw this one also the other day, it and the 62 ragtop behind it looked like they'd driven in... ALL the old pontiacs are cool...
The case lengths are different between those transmissions - You'll need to adapt a different crossmember too. Theres several differences between "early" cast-iron Powerglides and the later aluminum units. Expect to make some driveshaft mods, too. For all the effort it'll take to get an alum. case 'Glide to work, I'd recommend just upgrading to a Turbo 350 and getting another gear out of the deal. It's about the same amount of work. Scotch
