sounds like florida and whatever other states this p***es in will be the new homes to all the kit car manufacturers out there...

not sure I like the restricted use clause either, but my current insurance says basically the same thing, so I suppose just like anything else you could probably have the choice to ***le it as a '07 and insure it like a driver and be happy...

I put a lot of faith in SEMA and if that's what they are pushing for it's probably out best bet to solve these types of problems...

I dont know anything about kit cars or using any new catalog parts...my truck was built in 1959...it is all pre 1959 parts except for tires...a real hot rod survivor...montana who p***ed this law, ***led, registered , and insured this truck as a 1931 ford PU with no h***el or restrictions, because it is a 1931 ford, it had no ***le prior to me applying for one...my 32 i am building right now will be ***led, registered and insured as a 1932 ford...i will obtain this with just a signed, notarized bill of sale from the man who i bought the body and frame from, it is all 1932 ford real henry ford parts(no reproduction parts) neither of my cars have anything to do with kit cars ...i believe if it is a kit car or aftermarket frame it should be ***le as the year that the frame was made, like a motorcycle build...

Fla. has Street Rod tags that only allow you to drive to club meetings & shows. Seems unreasonable to me, maybe the penalty for the lower fee.

Exactly. If you want to drive the car anywhere, anytime, you need to skip the special street rod registration. Just get the car tagged like any other daily driver. Hell, Florida already has hundreds of specialty plates anyway. Just find one and use it. Normal tags in this state are ridiculously cheap anyway. Why bother?

so the cars can be ***led easily, but you still can register however you want? is that how it works? and they will issue a vin# and tag/sticker that will work for any vehicle that doesn't have a vin then?

I bet insurance companies won't be too thrilled with the possibilities that this presents... but sounds overall good!

once i applied for a ***le with a notarized bill of sale from the seller...the registration was the same as the ***le, a 1931 ford...i got new plates...no street rod,no yom,no vintage...and cars older than 11 years are registered for life... my plates say PERM instead of current year...i never have to deal with registeration every year...the car is permantly registered...

If the information posted about the Florida House Bill is correct and complete, your method will not help those who need a ***le. "H.B. 545 provides specific registration and ***ling cl***es for street rods and customs, including kits and replicas." You have to get the street rod/custom ***le. "H.B. 545 provides that vehicles ***led and registered as street rods and custom vehicles may only be used for occasional transportation, exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, etc. and not for general daily transportation." So, you're ***led, but your stuck with this registration that only allows these restricted uses. You cannot get it tagged like any other daily driver.:(

If you need a ***le in FL, you can follow the procedures that are already in effect in the DMV manual. There is already a process for complete older cars that have no current ***le such as ones bought in states with no ***le requirement or for long abandoned cars. For those cars, they can be ***led for what they are, i.e. 50 Chevrolet etc. with proper do***entation. Affidavit, Bill of sale, Inspection by officer, application for ***le. Interestingly, it's the same forms for automobile, motor home, trailer, or vessel.... I did this a few years ago and had no problems getting a ***le for a 57 Ford bought in GA with just a bill of sale. It's a h***le making an appointment with the compliance inspector, but the process is already well do***ented.

For cars that are ***embled from parts of multiple vehicles like mine, there is also already a ***le procedure, but it will end up ***led as a "2007 ASPT" and not as a 57 Lotus. It's in the process manual and the DMV here in Orlando is very familiar with it. It's tedious, but not impossible and works fine for mutts like mine. The intent is mostly to try to stop stolen parts from ending up in multiple remanufactured cars. That procedure will remain in place. Keep in mind that not every car ***embled from parts is a street rod or custom.

What the new HB545 procedure will allow is a ***le that reflects what the custom car/kit car/street rod actually resembles. Otherwise, it is already possible now to ***le a car built with multiple sources of new and used parts. But driving a 2007 ASPT is not as cool as driving a 29 Ford, I guess.:) And I suppose if blue dots are important to you that's a plus. There are no emission or safety inspections here, so no gain there, but I suppose if they ever came back it could save a lot of h***le to have a street rod ***le and registration.

Somebody just started a pe***ion to the government in England along the same lines, allowing 'cl***ic' cars older than 25 years to have free road tax.

Basically saving the owner some $400 a year in license fee. There is a clause in there that also says "to be used as occasional transport and hobby driving" or words along those lines.

There are other countries in europe where you have to apply for a special license EVERY time you want to drive your hot rod or custom, and you have to specify your route, when you're going, how long you'll be driving etc.

I wish they could just leave us alone to drive our cars without always wanting to change things 'for the better'
