I have a reliable stock babbitted engine in my '31 Jalopy coupe. I'm interested in adding some speed parts to it, but I'm working with a small budget. Therefore, I'm on the lookout for good used parts. Anyone out there have any used EQUIPMENT FOR SALE

If you are using a Ford go a hi comp head, 'b' cam and a Model B carb and you will fly down the road. Those are your biggest bang for your buck.

Just keep checking the for sale section on here and on the Ford Barn. Banger hop up parts come up for sale often.

Cl***ic banger story… pump one speed accessory into the vein, and you’ll start skipping meals and cheating at cards to buy the next one! Welcome to the other side!

  7. I am doing the same build myself I would recommend a downdraft carburetor a single 97 or holly 94 really makes them more drivable because they have an actual accelerator pump. The next big thing I would highly recommend is getting a high compression head 6.0 to 7.0 is about the maximum you should go on a babbit bearing engine You can buy these heads brand new for around $400 but they are cast iron not aluminum, The cool thing is they look bone stock if you're trying to build a Model A sleeper The restoration guys use them to make their cars more drivable.
Paul shin the model A guru on YouTube told me he would not go higher than 6.5 on the compression ratio I would take his word over mine any day of the week The guy is almost a genius when it comes to model A stuff.

The next improvement you could do is lighten the flywheel even a lightened up flywheel is stupid heavy still I believe weighing in around 33 lb before it is trimmed up they're over 50 lb,.
If you do not care about the drive trim looking original I've been told a t5 out of an S10 is an excellent swap so you can go modern highway speeds. If you want to keep it traditional a lot of people do the 39 Ford trans but if I remember correctly it takes an adapter.
Myself I am just going to use the stock Ford Model A transmission because I found one for literally $5 and after an $8 gasket kit and probably $10 worth of spray paint it looks brand new. Oh and another huge improvement towards the drivability of a Ford Model A engine is get a model B distributor It has a vacuum advance so you don't have to fiddle with the controls on the steering column anymore.
Realistically with those few things done You should get about 75hp and improve its driveability quiet a bit, I know 75 horsepower doesn't sound like a lot but you're essentially just shy of doubling it.

I guess none of that answers the question You are looking for speed equipment, I unfortunately can't point you in the right direction for used stuff, I live in Southern California and hit just about every antique swap meet within a 200 mi radius of here and model a performance stuff just doesn't turn up especially in a reasonable price range. Hopefully somebody on this amazing website can help you out in sourcing some cool stuff.

Model B distributors are automatic mechanical advance, not vacuum. The work great! I run one on my B engine and a Weber carb and manifold with a 6.0-1 Snyder head.
