Ouch! That sucks. How did that happen? I'm sure that my 61 is about as wide as your Ford, and I had no problems with rubbing fenders. The Kar Kaddy's wheels turn a bit, but they'll scuff on real sharp turns. All I know is that in the Kar Kaddy's manual it says to lock the steering wheel. I did so with two ratchet tie downs attached to the steering wheel and brake & clutch pedals. No problems here to Vegas and back.
I bought a "lock out" driveshaft for my '28. works slick. Lever in the car (hidden) disconnects the rear from the back of the shaft. Was a little pricey but eliminates the guesswork.
Dollies Works great! The one I rented had a pivot in the middle... Makes it impossible to back up...it just folds up... For this type - lock the steering wheel. T
That's sorta like driving here from New Hampshire to Connecticut, isn't it ? Seriously though, I agree with 28tudor .. use a trailer. A friend tow-dollied a 54 Ford from PA to Mass, one sharp turn put the dollies wheel into the front quarter! For short distances I would flat tow as blackjack mentioned. (But he did it long distance!) Trailer or flat tow -- either is better than a dolly.
Possibile clearance issues with the tow bar/car/truck, look at the pic of the Chevy pickup on the dolly and imagine the over hang of the Merc rear quarters
If you're putting dolly fenders into the car fenders it's because you didn't lock the steering wheel.
The tail shaft is turning on the non syncro old gear cruncher ford & chev trans this means the first & reverse sliding gear is going to spin. it will sling enough lubricant to keep things lubed. As for the angle. Ive towed vehicles hundreds of miles at highway speeds on a wrecker tow sling raised much higher than would be the case on a tow dolly. never had any problems. Old Wolf
