Using what I have; what carb and cam would you use for a good street 283?

To the OP, it;s easy to get carried away with these simulations, just look at the tach of what you drive and ask yourself, how often do I cross 4500, you might be surprised how seldom it is, or maybe you live up there, it's your choice. This stuff is only for information.

Hoop, I get what you mean and I agree realistically I could probably get away with what is in it right now. Hell, it may already have a decent cam in it. Anyway, it looks like the comp 252 has the best low-end power but trails off rapidly compaired to the others and maxes out at around 240 hp. Honestly, I'm looking for a nice lumpty-lump sound at stop lights and a nice burble for cruising. I'm not going to put a race engine in the car for two reasons: 1. It's a non-handling 1958 technology boat Biscayne, 2. It's for my son and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I looked into my past and came to these conclusions honestly. Why I did not die young after some of the bone-head things I tried is anyone's guess, sometimes I wonder.

Comp 12-210-2, Edelbrock 1406, sounds nice, runs well.

You have been getting great cam advice here. Going back to the intake, that C3B is very similar in design to the original Z28 manifolds. It works well at higher RPM with a larger square bore carb at the expense of some bottom end efficiency. If it is in good shape, I would sell it off and pick up a used 2101 which would be ideal for what you are doing, and you'll likely be money ahead. The 2101 manifold and 1406 carb were quite literally made for each other.

Agreed, with some notable exceptions on the first page.

I want to maintain the original SBC look with the oil filler/breather in the front of the engine and use script valve covers. I've noticed that some of those manifolds have an area that is built up and looks like it could be drilled for the breather, but that doesn't seem to be worth the effort as the difference should be negligible between the two manifolds.

The old 300 horse cam that they used in darn near everything thru the 70s' is a smooth torquey cam in a 283 or 307. It'll work great with a C3B and the Edelbrock.

sell the T5 before your big ol car brakes it. Try to sell your S10 T5 for $500 & buy a $500 74-81 Z28/TransAm/Corvette 4 speed (SuperT10) it could handle it. It comes with a big T400 driveshaft yoke.

Here is the 12-210-2 plus the 12-210-2 (268H-10) retarded 4 degrees..... or in at 110 ICL, that would normally be straight up but the cam is ground 4 deg advance.

This... You'll destroy that poor T5. If you want a 5-speed, get the World Cl*** T5 out of a late 80's or early 90's Z-28.

The 350 hp 327 cam (L79) would be a good one in a 283 with a set of larger heads on the street. (300 hp). Small holley (600 cfm) and some headers. JMO. Lippy

Here is my 283 so far....again, the 327-300 cam...it is really torquey and has super gas mileage....and it does get out of its way.

Like my ol super vette mechanic said....Chevrolet spent a lot of time and money designing a cam that gets you great performance, great torque, great gas mileage, etc....for a street driven cam, hard to beat a stock chevy cam....I love the 327-300 cam.

Like he says....want to kill the power and mileage....put in a hot cam that makes a lot of bump without changing the rear gears, va***n needs, heads, etc.

Most cams out there for SBC's are designed for 350s. I kept running the numbers and coming up with a cam no one made So I got creative. I ended up with the Voodoo 262 Intake Lobe and the Voodoo 276 Exhaust lobe on a 107 LSA with a 108 Intake Centerline. This cam timing made more power top to bottom. I would call Lunati and tell them what we found and your specs. The 262/268 was close if you set the LSA to 107 ICL 107. BTW a 750 CFM carb was worth an average 3 HP.
