I understand the boxes disappearing is not their fault but why the hell would you just leave a box sitting on the front step?? You would think that they would have a rule that you do not leave the package unless someone is there to receive it. Might as well leave it in the middle of the street. amounts to the same thing IMO.

Purolater is kind of expensive but at least if you are not home they will leave a note that they were there & they will try back at X time or call a # to make other arrangements (deliver to a neighbor, different delivery time when you will be home, etc). after two tries you have to go to the depot to get it your self. kind of a PITA but at least YOU get YOUR stuff not somebody else.

Those *******s lost an entire package of mine. Well that is except the empty box. My wife called and told me there was an empty box on the stoop- I couldnt beleive is, but empty and smashed. $100 worth of empty box. I went and asked if anything could be done and the stupid people didnt even know their own procedures. I had to call to get the form for missing mail, not that it did that much good. Still no parts. I noticed that some companies are recommending that you do NOT use the USelessPiiece of Shlt (USPS)

We use the USPS almost exclusively - they are running about 99.5% delivered satisfactorily for us. We use the Flat rate boxes and envelopes, but use both water-activated tape machines and industrial hot glue when packaging - and low compression peanuts. They treat the boxes roughly - so we adjust.

UPS does ok, our guy is conscientious. One day his sub left a $1500 plasma cutter out front of the garage door in full view of the street in the original Miller box - needless to say we made sure he got spanked for that gaffe!

Royal Mail has them all beat though - got an empty envelope back once with a 37 Pounds Duty due...

my brother works for the postal service.
he stated that anybody that still ships parcel post is nuts.
your **** gets the **** beat out of it if you ship parcel post.

if you dont want it dropped at your door, tell the sender.

the driver will leave you a slip.

then you can go pick it up at the local hub.

i work at home most of the time,so i usually catch them.

****ster said it all. When you ship merch. of value, insure it and use delivery conformation. Basic good sense applies to this situation. The P.O. does a great job considering the staggering amount of items they handle, its up to us to protect ourselves by spending a couple of bucks to make sure it happens right. Put the blame where it belongs. ~Sololobo~

Note too that 'Delivery Confirmation' and 'Signature REQUIRED' are just suggestions for USPS - absolutely a waste of money.

UPS and FedEx are definitely the way to go. They at least will get the signature if required. And, as stated earlier, if you don't want the box dropped on your front steps, signature required is the only way to fly.

I've been a mechanic for the Postal Service for over 28 years.
Although I've never worked on the delivery/mail processing side of the Post Office I can attest to the m***ive budget cuts due to the recession and shrinking mail volume.
The small shop where I work had 9 employees 10 years ago...Today we're 5 guys maintaining 200 trucks most of which are 20+years old.
It's the same way throughout the whole Postal system...Do more with less help.
Make sure every parcel you send is insured and delivery confirmed...This way it can at least be tracked if it comes up missing.

I had something similar with some Ebay parts. I get a card from the PO saying I had to go there to pick it up. I get there and they say it was picked up already. No, says I, then a lady takes me in the back and apologizes because she thinks they gave it to the wrong person. I get home and there is a message, fortunately the guy they gave it to was my house number but 2 streets away and he looked me up and called to tell me he had it!

Shipping by USPS ****s. They have essentially no online tracking and if someone forgets to scan the barcode when it gets shipped, it's lost in the system. This happened to me and it took weeks before the package finally showed up. Both the seller and I were thoroughly disgusted with USPS and he was ready to send me a credit for the purchase. USPS seems to work ok with packages of less than 10 pounds. I would never ship anything valuable or heavy by them.

The bad part for shipping/receiving anything for me is my work schedule. There is no real "local" hub either. The closest UPS hub is 18 miles away. 36 mile round trip. One of the draw backs of living in the middle of nowhere I guess. So far I haven't had any big issues with lost/damaged items though. I have had tires l ordered for an OT vehicle left on the porch, along with other large items (rocker sliders for a FJ80 Land Cruiser), with no issues. But they usually deliver an hour or so before my normal "get home" time. Sooner or later my luck will run out though and I'll be very angry.

FWIW I have used USPS Priority Mail Evelopes and boxes to ship auto racing memorabilia from Southern California to everywhere in the U.S. for 17 years and have never had a package go missing. I know what could happen but so far it's been all good.
