Steve Stanford is so good it's sick.

the car resulting from this painting is really attractive. it made the mag rounds a few years back.

Just imagine if Ford made the Model A or Deuce for 40 years with basic ch***is
    updates along the way...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, Ford's ch***is layout was basically the same from 1908 through 1948 (with basic engine updates along the way). Same thing, no?

DrJ you are right, I was weaned on VW's, owned 3 of them they were my affordable "funcar" of the 60's. Now I can afford a hotrod, but back then they were (to me anyway) the closest thing to a '40 2 dr sedan that I could afford. They bring back memories of my young adulthood.

  5. I was just about to post the Ed Roth "shop car" pic but Steve beat me to it. Thought I had one of a famous driver (maybe Petty?) roadracing a bug but I can't find it. I'll keep looking.

Don mind the hot rod bug post but do not want to see Cal Look rides (that can stay on the bug sites (I love the look, just dont want to see them here, I can go to the other sites to see Cal look rides or any with a modern look).. if they are done like a hot rod, I'm cool with looking at those.

I dig the pic of the body on a A ch***is with a deuce style grill and V8 in front. Is that a real car or just photoshopped concept.

    hatch,
don't know if you saw it or not but the one you posted as your favorite was built a few years back by a guy in virginia. there was a feature on it in custom rodder about 5 years ago or so. to make it even more crazy it was built in like 6 weeks. i'll try and find the issue tonight...ken....

watch it 60s Style or i'll SQUASH you like BUG! [IMG]

love the g***er Bugs by the way. i swear i don't remember EVER seing a pic of a G***er Bug before. i must have as much as i read about VWs when i was a kid but i prolly did'nt pay much attention to that style at the time.

the lack Stanford Bug RULES and i like the Fiat grill photshop too. HATCH. i think i have a pic of a Bug with the fadeaway fenders like the Stanford convert concept. it does'nt look near as cool as the drawing though. in fact i think it's kinda ugly and thats why i did'nt post it before but since you brought it up i'll post it.

TXPanzer. i like yer Bug, very nice, but done that style it would be O/T. we are treading a thin line between on Topic and off topic as it is but i will defend to the the death (or my banning from the HAMB) that a Bug done up in the traditional style has a rightful place here on the HAMB.

alright. can't find the fade away fendered Bug but i did just realize that the roof on this Bug/truck is from a VW Bus. i knew it loked like SOMETHING [IMG]...

JEEM you got any VW concepts you might have done in the past you want to share?? maybe it's time to do one! [IMG]

Guess I wasn't clear... The Petty picture reminded me of another picture I've seen of him or some one like him actually behind the wheel of a rally style roadrace bug. I looked again but still can't find it.

i gotta say that saying cal look bugs are off topic in my opinion is wrong. the cal look as it is known was started in the 60s. are all the 60s style customs here OT? i don't think so. maybe i say that because in both cases thats what i have always built. i, like alot of guys here cut my teeth on vws. i've loved those cars for a long time. unless you count my wife's New Beetle i haven't owned one for a long time. this thread has me wanting to build another cal look bug so bad i can taste it. even considered putting an add in the paper and selling the '55 plymouth to fund the venture. alas the plymouth is to far into the project for that now. the bug will come i've never stopped thinking about them and theres a few nice cal lookers around here to remind me. that and i've still got a set of BRMs stuff away from past plans. but back to the issue if 60s style cars fit in here so do cal look bugs of the same era...ken....

Hello? Whats the ***le of this thread?
V-dubs in the traditional hot rod style

Yea, even as a V-dub lover, the traditional "Cal-Look" is of topic on this thread.......

Dan Gurney raced the Empi car at the N***au Raceweek in '63 and '64. ( in a Bug only race )
In '63 he won, and in '64 he beat A.J.Foyt to win again, but got disqualified after the race, giving Foyt the win...
Gurney's car was Darrel Vittone's (sp) Inch Pincher.

Here is a 57 ghia I built some 10 years ago. Back then most people were restoring those old ghias to stock condition. So the flat paint and racing decor was something of a protest I guess. I`ve never liked to go mainstream [IMG]
I was heavily involved with vws back then, and have built several custom bugs, buses, a buggy and this ghia. But I got so bored with it when the resto trend boomed. Whats the challenge in a lowered restored stocker? Time was ready to move on to Hot Roddin early Fords. That is the only true Hot Rod nostalgia in my opinion. I have kept a 58 convertible bug however, just never now if I get the urge to hear that flat four sound again. Fun to see this new Vw-Rod trend tho. Some of those bugs look *****in.

Sweet Ghia and very cool pic.

I also have a bug put back that I've had for a bit...it's a '59 on a '71 pan, with a 2L type 4 engine with dual carbs, flip front with headlights gl***ed in. I have g***er plans for it...

One of those one day things, it sits in storage...Here is a pic just before I put it up.

Well, diggin' through some old pictures...here is a shot of my highschool street sweeper...lol. On any weekend night we were either fixing stuff, or racing minitrucks "uptown". We ran in packs... [IMG]

And picture two clearly demonstrates how to make a cool bus...even cooler. I welded a 21 window roof section onto my '67 Deluxe.

    1low,
yeah i agree maybe off topic for this thread, but i got the impression most were saying off topic for this board. thats the point i was trying to make. yeah cal look doesn't fit in with the topic of this thread, but i do think they are just as on topic for this board as any 60s style custom is. they are surely more on topic with this board than probably half the **** that gets posted here. thats why i stopped coming here as much long ago. still a way cool place but you have to tread thru alot of bs to get to the good stuff. i still wouldn't trade it for a damned thing. even with the **** this board has more general knowledge floating around than probably any 6 others out there...ken....

How is my "traditional" cal-looker any different or "off topic" than the white vert or the bus posted on this topic.

    just curious ...

  23. Funny this topic is up....I met this guy last night here in Austin that has a bug that looks pretty damn good as a roadster. A LOT of work went into it and A LOT of thinking and planning. He was going to bring it to the Roundup but due to the regulations, he was not allowed in. Maybe he will be crusing around though.

There is actually a US bug with a modified panzer/desert ******** logo on the side [IMG] and i beleive one of the fast vw clubs in belgium has a member car running the no plate 'NAZI WGN'

personally, i run a nice custom sticker on my rear window - 'Financed by Hitler, built by Porsche'

(in fact, that's part correct - should also add 'resurrected by the British army in post war germany, without which it wouldn't be the best selling car of all time' ...but it wouldn't fit across my window [IMG] )

...and this. it's a Type 3 Ghia, only around 43,000 were made, and few exist today.
