My father is looking at a 1963 Chevrolet Impala , the huy tells us that the ***le is for the car , but , the vin plate is missing from the driver's side door pillar , does anyone know where else on these Impalas to look for the vin number , I've been told to look under the dash on the p***enger side at the glove compartment , any other places I should look? , any information is greatly appreciated , thanks in advance.
It is on the frame right in the middle of the X portion. Upperside of course. You have to remove the body. I don't know about 63's, but 60's were ID'd off the engine number/not the door tag. At least in Texas. Mine has not had the orig engine since 327's came out.
Look on top of the drivers side frame rail behind the wheel near the rear bumper mount.Don't know if its visable with the body on,maybe with a mirror. These 63/64 Chevys are notorious for the vin falling off.I have seen several with this problem.
Thanks , I always heard of the body being stamped under the back seat , is this true? , I also heard of a number being under the dash on the p***enger side at the glove box , is that true? , any help is appreciated....
You will find the sequential VIN on the frame rail drivers side behind the rear axle axle kick and in front of the bumper mounts. It is located on top of the frame and under the trunk floor. There is about an inch and a half between the body and the frame. Most often you will have to clean it with emery cloth. When I worked Auto Crime, we used to chop a hole in the trunk floor and look right down at it. As I recall you will find 3=year of manufacture, then a letter indicating location of plant T= Tonawanda, the 6 digit vin. To get the whole vin you need to build the rest from body type. Chevrolet'starts with 1 then 4 numbers indicated body type, then year (3), then plant letter (T), then 6 digits ... you can surf the net for the body codes ... as I recall impala coupes are 6337 or something like that ... been awhile since I took a "Hotski" of the street of Brooklyn. My memory is a little off ... this link will get you there ... http://www.yearone.com/yodnn/tech/V...evyFullSizeVINDecoding/tabid/346/Default.aspx
Thanks 55 chevr , I appreciate the info , but , I wasnt wanting to cut the car up , its real solid , I was just wondering if there is anywhere on the car to match the ***le that the guy has with the V.I.N. on the car since the tag is gone on the hinge pillar on the driver's side , just dont want to buy a "hotski"...lol

Emery the top of the rail until the metal is shiny and use a mirror ... it will be hard to see but it is there ...
Not sure about 63's, but another possible location is behind the heater box on the cowl, viewed from inside the engine compartment. I've found this on other GM cars of the 60's & 70's. A partial VIN, year, plant code and sequential number. Weren't 63 VIN tags pop riveted on instead of spot welded?
All the '62-'64's I have owned ( 10 drivers plus that many parts cars ) were spot welded on and I had a couple that had popped off but fortunately I didn't lose the tag.
