Can the explorer 8.8 be converted to 4 lug in any way. I'd rather not deal with the offset of the rangers axle. If I went with a maverick axle how much fab is involved to get it in there. I found a 71' for $150 do you have any idea what the ratios for those were?

If you have a 5 lug Maverick, I bet there are a bunch of people who would gladly trade you Maverick 4 lug axles for your 5 lug. They are both 28 spline and same lengths.
Back to original question. I think a 4 lug would handle a mild 302. Depends how you drive it.

They were in Maavericks and Comets behind 6 cylinder engines. The pumpkin is the same as 5 lug v-8 pumpkins. You won't have a problem using it behind a v-8

Yes, the Explorer can go 4-lug, too.

That Maverick axle is likely 2.79:1 or 3.08:1.

That is 4-on-4-1/4". Not the correct pattern for the Falcon, which is 4-on-4-1/2".

    See my previous post.

  9. As stated it has a slightly smaller bolt pattern. However, that rearend may have a 3.55 ratio, which is good to get. The 8-inch third member will interchange with any other 8-inch. 3.55 are hard to find, and Must II are one good source for them.

  10. A Smaller bolt pattern in the axles means a redrill to fit those wheels that this entire exersice is based upon - fitting those wheels.

Just a quick FYI on this deal too.... The axles from a 4 lug 8" 1970 Maverick rear end do not interchange with the 5 lug axles from the same year V8 rear end in the same car. The brake off set is different enough that it won't fly, and if memory serves the bearing diameters are different as well.

Another FYI, Mini-Lite currently produces two 5 x4.5 lug pattern wheels called the MagStyle and EV2000 that are similar to the Rewinds.
I ran these vintage 15 X7 Mini-Lites as autocross wheels on my '67 Mustang......

And here they are on an old Boss Trans Am car......

Yeah, but he already owns the Rewinds.

  14. Get the super narrow s-10 rear @ 54ish and 1" wheel adapters that go from 5x 4-3/4 to your 4x 4-1/2.

Does anybody know exactly which years of the explorer are options for the falcon swap?

If I am thinking the bolt pattern early 4 lug and late 4 lug are different between the years you are wanting to swap anyway

    Once more:

The Maverick was the last Ford car to share the same 4-lug pattern as the 6-cylinder Falcon, Comet, and Mustang, and that was 4-on-4-1/2".

After that, the pattern went to 4-on-4-1/4".

I understood that swapping the explorer axle would require shortening the long side and it would also be 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. I just wanted to be clear on the years of the explorer that the axle should come from.

1993-2001(early). After that, the Explorer went IRS. Before 1995 they had drum brakes.

There should be a ton in the yards.

Most are limited-slip. It will say in the tag. 3 55 isn't. 3L55 is, and so on.

If i had a choice which would be better. I realize the limited slip is basically a positraction.
