Hi everyone, I have come across a few v8-60 for a good price one of which i plan to rebuild for a all out race setup, however, buying an old race cam simply is not an alternative where i live due to cost and availability of parts. So my only option is to regrind one of the stock cams. I have searched long and hard for v8-60 any hop-up cam specs, but i simply cant find any. My question is therefore; does anyone have either cam specs or patterns for a v8-60 cam, any information regarding building v8-60s will be helpful but specifacally cam grinds would be apreciated and will be helpful.
" Way Back Story" Many years back,,Shorty Johns< Who raced V8 60 Midgets in the late 40s & 50's,,,Told me,when I asked what he was doing!???? With sparks flying off his shop grinder!!! He would stop from time to time to match a little homemade tin templet { Lobe shape =go no go }. He was grinding off the base bottom of lobe only{ not the lobe point/tip }. Said he designed the his own tempet ,that gave almost 1/8 inch extra lift*,,.An then would set retard* too the cam timing by 5*to 6*.< Add more V-spring PSI, an that retard,is what helped make it a higher RPM cam. This by the way ,was Bobby Johns Dad< Bobby who raced a lot in south Florida an in NASCAR,God Bless both RIP. George Ikert< also one of my Mentors,, that owned a great custom paint n body shop,I worked after school in,also made by hand alum. ,Midget Bodys for Shorty. I'm 81 now, was kid back then,,so this type stuff often is lost. Hope you even joy it. 40s n early 50s cam tech. Shorty did win a good number of times!!
New blanks probably aren't available (Schneider doesn't have any Y-block blanks). You might have to send your cam to Jerry to be reground. The base circle of the cam probably will be reduced when re-ground.
Not even close. My cam guy can do V8-60 regrinds, but you need to decide how radical you want to go. Also, budget for adjustable lifters, as reducing the cam base circle moves the stock lifters to far down in the hole. jack vines
