I just got a line on a flathead. The guy said it was a 60hp. I've bought my fair share of motors and cars before, but never a flatty.
He says it's almost complete, just missing intake and exhaust manifolds, it has been stored inside, and "ran when they pulled it from the car".

Question is, Should I look for anything special when I check it out? Any flathead quirks I should look for?

    Any help would be great!:)

There are race car guys looking for these, should be an easy item to move if that is your plan. Local guy has one in a '27 T roadster. There are early 60's with tin sides, and later ones with a full cast iron block. Check out the tin sides for rot. The 1940 had bigger bearings and is a better all around 60. :)

Thanks, I saw that page a day or two ago, but not really much in the way of what to look for when buying one of the old girls.
As for my pm's, I don't have any.

What will you put it in?? The 60 is tiny and has little low-speed pull. In its original full-sized Ford home, it was pretty much an obstruction to traffic, which is why its sales plunged to nearly nothing after 1937.
IMHO, it is only a good choice if you are building a very small and light rod.
There are people looking for good ones for midgets and such, and it could and probably should be parlayed into a full size flathead. If you keep it, think maybe 1500 pound car...

Check for cracks between the bores and the valves.sand with 400 wet and dry sandpaper and a bit of diesel.wipe clean then with a piece of wet chalk, wipe across the transfer area .a light wipe off will reveal any cracks.price if cracked ,becomes a case of brew .walk away .NO ,RUN.

I would have to agree with Bruce. The 60 is not my first choice for a rod. I would be thinking 85 hp 59AB type from 1946 to 1948 or 100 hp 8BA type from 1949 thru 53.
It really is a tiny little motor. By the same token I'd stay away from the Lincoln 337 due to is extreme size and weight plus lack of speed & dress up goodies.

Damb! I just looked at the date on this one. I didn't know they went that far back.
