My motor will run and idle fine with the vac*** advance holes plugged up on the distributor and carb, but when i hook up the advance it will idle but the second i give it throttle it cuts out. i have been running the vac*** advance for a year with no problems the motor is a 73 lincoln 460. i just set my timing, air fuel mixture, idle, and the points are fairly new and gapped correctley. any suggestions?? Pomp
That happened to me once--took me a while to figure it out. I believe you'll find that your distrib has an eccentric pivot for the plate that moves when the vac advance pulls on it and that it has worn to the point that movement changes the gap drastically. Try moving it by hand and watching what happens.
Might also check to see if there's a ground wire that grounds the breaker plate to the distributor housing, if this wire is loose or broken then you might get the symptoms you're seeing.
