Hello Just want to know where to take vacum advance for the distributor on v8 flathead 1953? on my disrib i have only vacum advance! is it good or not? thanks
The distributor must be hooked to the port near the center of the back of the original carburetor. This is NOT a normal vacuum hook up. It uses ported (taken from just above throttle) vacuum at part throttle, and derives its full throttle advance from a port in the venturi area of the carb, drawing upon the pressure drop signal in the venturi. It can only be used with a Ford or Mercury carb designed for this double vac tap, and can only be used on a stock single carburetor setup without very serious and careful retuning of its springs. It is a mediocre distributor on a stock engine, frequently providing less advance than needed, and is nearly hopeless for a hot rod. There are several possible aftermarket and modified distributor possibilities. By the way, if you want a manual on it, I can copy and send you a French (Ford of Belgium) manual on this thing! Bruce
I have read the distributors on the newest flatheads ('48-'53) Ford built was their worst dist ever made for the flathead V-8. You do know that Mallory makes a (12 volt) electronic dist for the 48-53 motor? Check out www.fordbarn.com there are very knowledgeable folks there that know their flatties!
Yes i know for the mallory distrib, but it's expensive. i'm not using the original ford, i'm using a dual point from the french army! all aluminium , it's light and look nice, but maybe it not fit!
OK, I think the French military one has normal centrifugal advance too--someone on here will know all about it. Let me know if you still want the stock info. Bruce
