thanks again all for the positive feedback.

i went back to school this week, so no progress on my end.

Alex's old buddy Larry S. bored the Corvair endframe for the lip seal...now we can build the box....

by the way, that mount IS light!

i also had a great conversation with Charlie at Maverick Performance (transmission division of Winters) about clutchflites. anyone who is considering refurbishing an old unit or converting a new one should make him your FIRST call. the number is 717 764-8269. i got good information and i felt a lot more confident about everything after i hung up. we plan on just ordering the pump cover plate right now so we can continue to mock things up, then build the trans when we break it all down to paint the ch***is.

I just talked to a gentleman who's name is **** Kath. He said that he raced against this Henry J back in the early 70's. **** said he thinks he thinks has pictures of it at Byron Dragaway from back then. He was going to try and find them.

BTW...he said the Henry J embar***ed him too! LOL

  12. Awesome project! I am enjoying following along. I too have 4 lug front Halibrands on my project, don't see them too often. That is great that you located the wheels etc.

Hats off to you for resurrecting what was one of my favorite cars. Vail's response serves as a testament to your efforts and sacrifice is keeping the memories alive. I had the Pop Hot Rod Magazine issue that featured the car. I bought just for that feature alone. Like all who have responded here, Henry J's are a big favorite of mine. Here in So-Cal (like most everywhere else I guess) there existed at least one or two examples that ran. Thos particular model served as probably one of the fastest and quickest "J's" out there

firstly, apologies to all of you very supportive folks who have been following along and have waited VERY patiently for a long-overdue update. i had not posted in a while because we were at a standstill with availability of key parts, and some bad luck with a CL seller. we needed a Lakewood ****tershield to mate to the clutch-flite and the front pump cover plate/snout from Winters/Maverick for the clutch-flite so we could start mocking up the rest of the driveline.

now we are moving fast. last week i was on spring break from school...the first part of the week i had a fair bit of homework to do, so it was not until the last part of the week that i was able to be over over there every day... but now we do have a roller.

i'm in-between cl***es right now so i will post bits & pieces, along with pics.

    thanks for waiting everyone

here is the radiator mounting (a nod to Kiwi Kev here, we borrowed a little bit of inspiration from his Nasty Habit Willys for this). it's a '56 chevy radiator. we will shorten the uprights below the tubular crossmember and drill speed holes in them as well

this is the new steering arm that Alex brewed up for the top of the spindle, tack welded into place and gusseted. it will use 1/2" heims at the pivot points. the steering geometry is pretty well worked out now too. Alex had to re-clock the pitman arm...here it is tacked into place. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOUR WELDING SKILLS ARE SUB-PAR, AND DO NOT POSESS A SERIOUS TIG MACHINE THAT CAN THROW SOME AMPS INTO WELDS LIKE THESE!

here is the start of the steering column. thanks to the tech section of the HAMB for the inspiration of using the common hardware store implement/wheelbarrow-axle bearings. the shaft is early ford with the tapered/keyed fit for the hub, and the corvair stub turned down, ready to weld into the end of the shaft. a Speedy-Bill 3-bolt adapter hub will be used to mount the vintage Superior 500 3-spoke wheel. this shaft will be shortened considerably once the seat standoffs are welded to the car's frame and we can locate the wheel. the jacket is 39 or 40 ford as well, we will abbreviate the bell-mouth from the top to use the bearings

This is cool, glad to see an old g***er get saved and not bling blinged. When its running I would leave the paint as is maybe redo the lettering only and dont touch the fur on those rims. Great job!
