    Assume a Model A engine?
I don’t know the procedure, but a better topic title may help.

At the top right of you post is “thread tools”, click on it to edit your title.

    Ie a “banger”
Is 4 cylinders, so can be confusing.

Everybody who knows... knowswhat I'm talking about... I just can not remember if the outcome had to be 9 or 8.

Im 400 miles away from my shop and wanted to help a friend on the phone but did not want to confuse him more....

You can measure at one lifter and the other you can adjust..... this rule tells you which ones are "couples"....

The rule of 9. #1 valve open, adjust #8. #2 open, adjust #7.
Or: intake valve almost closed, adjust exhaust of same cyl. Exh valve begins to open adjust intake of same cyl.
