Valve adjusting question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Giovanni, May 28, 2011.

  1. So that means I did something different with my hyd cam SBC with roller rockers. I barred over the engine in firing order with marks on the balancer and adjusted down each pushrod/rocker from zero lash to half turn down. Cold engine, not running.
I bought a set of rocker clips years ago and never broke open the plastic, from a SnapOn dealer. Wasn't but almost 20 years ago.
Hot vs cold? Might be hard to adjust valves on a flathead Ford while keeping the engine hot, but creativity will definitely apply here. I can see a heat source plumbed from a steam heated building or another engine running while coolant is plumbed in tandem.
My early hot experience, 504 Cummins V8 while in the Air Force, so that makes me a 45 year old punk and I'm good with that.
Valve adjusting on a REAL RACE ENGINE with the engine running? I never saw Bill Frye do that on his roller dirt late model engine. In fact, he was using a torque gauge to test valve spring tension before bothering with adjusting the valve lash. Why would 100 laps on a 3/8 mile track have ANY KIND of parts failure as simple as a valve spring while twisting 8500 rpm many times?
I don't need to venture a guess about an engine needing to be checked with clay in the valve reliefs to know to needing not to be having valves adjusted while the engine is running. The first high speed thunk would be the beginning of the last.

I love the way some people can take a discussion about how valves were adjusted in the 60s on factory engines designed to be used everyday on the street and compare that to modern roller cams, hydraulic cams and pure race car applications. Talk about apples and oranges.
