I am looking for some suggestions for a seal that could be used on my 50 Mercs engine. I installed aftermarket finned aluminum valve covers that came with studs chrome nuts and small nylon type seals for under the nut. These have since dryed out and cracked allowing oil to seep out. I would like to keep the stud & nut attachment hardware but need to substitute something for the seal. I thought about using o rings but I think they would probably squeeze out once they were tightened enough to seal around the valve cover. I wondered if there might be a OEM type seal that could be used. Trouble is that they couldn't be much more that 3/8 " or they will hit the fins. Thanks for any suggestions.

You can get plastic "washers" from hardware suppliers, Lowes, Depot, etc

Try Moon they have nylon washers that come with their center bolt finned valve covers.
