I’ll be running 1.500” diameter valve springs in my engine. I have 1.550” locators to go below them. My question is: I have 1.437” shims here in my garage, rather than purchase new 1.550” shims, is it ok to use the 1.437” shims under the 1.550” locators? I have a feeling the answer is no, but I don’t want to throw money away if I can use the shims I have.
Try a...fitup ! If the spring overhangs the shim at all...do it right, and buy the proper shims. It's not like they are the most expensive thing on the car !! Mike
The locators do overhang the shim, but only by the smallest of margins. And you are correct, they are not expensive. I’m just at the nickel and dime portion of the engine build and I’m getting sick of ordering crap, thought I may be able save some time and money. You gentleman are correct, I will do it the right way.
If you haven't opened up the spring pockets in the heads yet,be very careful. The water jacket is VERY close. I have a pair of Z28/LT1 castings that have several breakouts into water jackets. I purchased them new in '70 and never got to use them.
Spring pockets are already at 1.550”. They are aftermarket aluminum heads. I’m just being a cheap Dutchman when it comes to the shims.
