So I had a friend bring me in his fresh built 331 Cadillac for an intake swap. Simple enough but he said I should look into the valve tick. So after a whole bunch of head ache. I put in a new caddy lifter, pushrod, new rocker arm shaft. Still tickin. Any ideas? I have localized it to an exhaust side of the number 1 cylinder. Thanks
how is the lift onthat rocker, compared to the others? they do tend to wear out cam lobes occasionally.
Check the valve lash aside from the cam lobe lift, if it is loose that is your "ticking" if not them maybe check for an exhaust leak on that side of the engine, exhaust leaks can sound an awful lot like a chattery valve.
The ticking is definatly coming from the rocker. Not an exhaust leak. I can run the car with the valve cover removed. I was just shooting for maybe a cam lobe wore down. Or the motor was not broken in correctly. Seems that it is just one lobe. Is that possible? Ill check the lash.
One lobe per rocker. I had a 49 cad for about 30 years and replaced the cam at least a couple of times for rounded lobes. Both at the front end of the engine.
....maybe a long shot here, but sometimes a broken valve spring can make that ticking sound as well...it wouldn't hurt to look while you're checking things....
I agree with Spike, maybe a long shot, but you might wanna check for a busted spring pretty carefully. Sometimes hard to see where it's broken. And the keepers don't keep too well with a busted spring. And if the keepers should happen to pop out, the result is not pretty. Jack E/NJ
and also the pushrod seat in the rocker itself, oil flow blockage and also seen pics of the aftermarket units with incorrect machining in this area causing problems....good luck !~
