I have surfing ebay and other sites looking at the Vega styled boxes. I have never had a car with a Vega box so I really don't know what I am looking at. Are there certain ones to avoid?

Have there been any improvements that would drive you to buy the new Flaming River or other aftermarket boxes?

    Thanks

    Howdy Root...
If I remember correctly there are two manual boxes and one power.
The early 4 cyl cars had the small box and the later, bigger engined cars (or maybe ALL later versions...Monza etc) had the bigger, stronger box. Both fit the same bracket. Not sure if the pitman arm is the same or not.
I think the input spline is the same as well.
(I'm going on memory that hasn't been refreshed in 15 years for that info so take it with a grain of salt!)
There is an earlier version of this box, (pre Vega) that works as well. Some HAMBer mentioned it just the other day in fact.
Can't remember what it was on, but the differences are minor.

MUST be more info that someone can offer.....!?!? [IMG]

Roothawg - The Flaming river box has several improvements over a stock box It comes in two ratios 20-1 (stock) and a quicker 16-1.

The sector shaft rides in needle bearings instead of a bushing.

And the internals (sector shaft and gear, worm and nut) were increased in size.

And it comes in either cast aluminum or polished.

I have a 10 dollar used one on my 32 Roadster....

And a spare 15 dollar used one when the 10 dollar one wears out.

We had a " Vega King " a few miles from my house...he had over 100. Picked up good ones for 10 - 15 dollars.......ten years ago.

If I needed one now..... not counting my 15 dollar spare one....I would buy NEW....the only way now....all the used ones are used up......
