    Howdy,...
I am about to repaint the original 1st Veneys Vega funny car, and I am in dire need to find someone in the
Portland Oregon / Vancover Washington area that would be willing to work with me and contribute their art/skill in re lettering the Vega,
.Grille, Headlights, Bumbers, Window Mouldings, and all the Logos ,..
I have over 35 8x10 detailed photos of all everything you could need to see to do the job exact,..
I would love to have someone that has the old school funny car art work down and can duplicate almost if not exact art to this Vega funny car.
I did contact the original guy that lettered the car in 1972, Kenny Youngblood, but there was no way that I could afford his price,
..this car has been built by me and out of my 28 ft trailer so you can imagine the times I have endoured with waiting for the right
weather to pull it out and work on it,..But anyways,
I am finshing up the last little details on the body and could have it ready to paint by the first of next week,..
The car will be getting painted red at a custom shop in Vancover right off of I-5, and then would need the letterring done before the car is clear coated.

If you would like to/ or can help me out and letter/paint the items listed above please contact me,..the car will be painted red and ready for your art work,.
all I ask is that you have the talent/skill to freehand and paint old school Funny car style art work, and would love to want to do this work.

    thanks

    Alteredpilot,...Did he work at J&E Fiberglass ????

Yea Ken is a hard guy to keep on the phone when it comes to this Nostalgia stuff,..He really just aint interested,..I had lots of questions
for him,..but I came to the conclusion that his time is more important than for me to be bugging him about a car he drove 37 years ago,..its cool,
he is a really busy guy and I respect his talents , knowledge, and still compititive racing edge.
I hope to take it to Ohio some time soon loaded up on the original ramp truck and pay Ken a visit,..i would definatly ask him if he would want to drive it again,...that would be the cats meow.

Vic - Great work on this car. The lettering will really tie it all together. I can put you in touch with Don Tippets, but again, he won't donate his work. There's a few good stripers/letterheads around your area, so don't give up - keep the word out there and the right person will shake out...
Contact Chip Starr in St. Helens - he'll know someone.

  13. I look forward to seeing it, I had to work the last three CHRR, but this year I am unemployed so I get to go. :):(:):):)
Are you going to leave it injected or add a blower?, compete or exibition?
I always liked the injected nitro cars, some thing about the snap, crackle, pop, of one of those that sounds so cool.
good job on getting the tow car also should be great, sounds like a feature story for some hotshot mag. writer

also, if you clear over the lettering, you run a high risk of having a paint reaction which would equal disaster... HOK makes clearable striping paint, but could be spendy for how much you would need.

Youngblood might not be cheap, but how awesome would that be to have the king of drag car lettering letter the same car almost 40 years later? Priceless!!!

I had the privelage of watching Youngblood and Tom Kelly letter a Dodge Challenger funny car at the Flying Eyeball Reunion a few years ago. How is that for a piece of history when you are done?

You have no idea how bad I would love to have Youngblood ,..
you know his little signiture,.."Blood Did It",..If I could ever afford him and have him reletter the vega that signiture would have to read

    "Blood Did It Again"...........

...but seriously it would be priceless...

hEres some cool old news clips, and other photos I have of the Vega.....

I don't get it? You'll spend thousands of $ on the car, motor, paint etc., but you can't spring for the lettering & detailing? Did the engine builder work for FREE? Does the painter get FREE paint from his supplier? You know that 75% of all the people that will see this famous car really don't care if thing even runs. But they wiill notice if the restoration includes the correct lettering & headlight ,grill ,etc. If I were you I'd call Kenny back & tell him you must have made a mistake. You REALLY NEED to have HIM do the car. What ever Kenny wants to do the car, it isn't a cost....it's an investment. As a letterer-pinstriper for over 30 yrs., I can tell you that this job that Kenny will do for you will add many $$$ to yor investment.

I have read and reread this one over and over, and I dont recall seeing where he asked for a free lettering job.

This thing is being done on a budget, and he is asking for someone to letter the car that can do a decent job, and is affordable.

Youngblood would Rule!! But if the cost of getting Kenny to do it means the car has to sit for another 2-3 years to get finished to pay for it is out of the question.

And for the record,, 100% of the people that are going to see this car will want to see it run. And as long as the paint and lettering are close thats all that matters.

I don't know if this would pan out for you but I did a little research on Nat Quick.

Nat lettered many well known funny cars such as Berry Setzer's Vega
    [IMG]

Also, here's a link to a HAMB post about his work:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2402559

I found a phone number listing for him (707)769-8902 Petaluma, Ca

I hope this might be of some help.

    Heres the deal Mr.j,...
basically for the last 7 years Ive been on the road working on and for other funny car and dragster owners helping them all go rounds,..tha has been my passion, ive worked on these Nitro and Alky cars since 1995, and had my first addiction in 1978 at the age of thirteen polishing wheels and the body of Don the Snake we they came to Seattle twice that year,..
I am addicted, and there is no cure,..
As of January 1st of this year I let the last car owner TA/FC that I worked for, know that I needed a year or two off to be with my family, son, and to help with my wifes Home biz, and play catch up on our property, let alone I had my own famous car that I have already taken down the dragstrip 8 times, and wanted to pursue my dream and other goals.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSrdFK1dNmk

So it was time to put the car back to its original look to help refresh and help promote Nostalgia funny cars,..I have done this with an unemployed status, and very little money, and no help from anyone from around my area, and all out of my 28ft car trailer, I have wheeled and dealed extra parts that are not needed to get what I do need, and have gained many friends from around the U.S that have offered certain parts that fit this cars needs for the period correct look in which I have purchased..
I do have a free paint job from a reputable Custom car body shop in Vancover, but I have not approached them on someone to letter the car, thus the internet, hoping for someone that has lettered funny cars from the 70`s would step up and work with me to get the car right with the lettering, so this is where I am at,..waiting for the right person.
NO DAUGHT,..Kenny Youngblood is that absolute answer,..if I could afford him,..I cant,.and I want to get this car back out going down the dragstrip, and not in Primer grey.

Thats funny Rollieflex,...If I was keeping it blue doing my own name that is a picture of the paint scheme I would have used,..cool
I am sure Nat Quick is right there with Youngbloods prices, he is right there at the status qoue as a letterer.

I got this car febuary 2007,
and now almost 4 years later this is where it is at.

    NOTHING IS FREE,......

    Thanks
    Vic

To:rollieflex & vic, I also lettered a Barry Setzer car along with all the "Jungle Jim" cars from '73 on, I also re-letterd & painted the headlights & grill, etc. on the "Jungle " car for the Garlits museum & numerous other top racers whileI had myshop next to "Bob Gerdes" Circus Custom Paint. I looked at your u-tube video, why not have that guy letter the car for you? I guess what I really don't get is that you seem like you've been around these cars a long time & you now that they are not cheap to build or run. Hey, you're still doing better than me,2 race cars,28' trailer,Vega chase car all on unemployment.PS., I was with Nat Quick this week end at Arties Party in Syracuse, LOL getting him to donate his time.

Mr.J,..THAT IS WAY COOL...whod a thought you are the guy who was thereback in the day and today that did those jobs,.great work.

Vics Vega logo was Vinyl,..I did the bumpers, grille, and side window moldings,..with a rattle can,.the headlights were decals.

I only have one race car at the moment,.and Ive spent almost everydime on this one,..and yes I know it will take some more.
I make some money here and there with parts and building chicken coups
or water tables and some occassional auto work,.but yea Its still like being unemployed not wrenching on a race car when I was actually bringing in the money,...all the hard work and money has been done its down to the lettering, and almost broke,..lol....
The car is getting painted at Eagle Automotive in Vancover by Kenny.
