If you were a little closer I'd give you a hand, my partner, Bendi the Stroke and I do a lot of restoration lettering on vintage race cars, the last being the fully restored 1969 Chi Town Hustler. What ever you do, dont do it in vinyl, nothing is worse then seeing a restored car done in incorrect vinyl lettering.

Now see this right here,..thats what these cars were all about
back in the day, the majority was always happy to lend a hand and help a guy out with a funny car,.. and if you live in the right area it still happens today too.
Very Nice work on the Chi-Town Hustler BigNick, and the other race cars
in your galleries,..outstanding. and thanks a bunch for the offer.

NO VINYL absolutly a no no,...

I am not looking for hand outs, and I sure aint begging,..just figured someone with the skills would want to be apart of it. I sure do want to get it back to the track,..
This Vega is not a Museum, show, or a cackle car,..its a RACE CAR

I'm not sure, but I MAY be in Portland, Oregon within the next 3 or 4 weeks. If so, I'll have a couple days to goof off. I'll be flying out and driving back. If all the planets were to line up just right, I could do the lettering for you. Maybe get you to put me up in the closest Ritz-Carlton and keep me supplied with a few greasy fries. =)
Anyhow, I just finished the original "Kempton's Shaker" '62 Fury from out in California. Been slingin' a quill since the 70's, and much of that has been on racecars, so I wouldn't have a problem with the Vega. It's hard to tell from the pics, but is that Gold Leaf? If so, gotta charge for the gold, of course, but it still wouldn't be too much $$$. Anyhow, I need to firm up my plans and see if it can all come together. I'd do it just for the kick of doing it (along with the afore-mentioned creature comforts, like food and bed, and I really ain't scared to crash on your couch and eat your fries). If you're interested, PM me, or better yet, email me at oldhotrodder1@yahoo.com
    Take care,
    Joe

  16. gee at this point there have been almost 1300 views, if veryone that vied this thread would send you $1 that might give you a start... seriously maybe you can raffle off an "honorary" crew position for CHRR, the winner would get addmission, a crew shirt, hat, and get to go to the starting line with the car and maybe even ride in the car on the tow back, it would be cheaper for you and if you raise enought for the lettering and the crew package...just a thought...

    Good one Jim(rustygem),.......

donations to contribute to the lettering of the Veneys Vega
can be made threw www.paypal.com to:
    nitrokids@charter.net

Now all I need is 3500 more views with donations of $1.00 each and I could have the original letterer Kenny Youngblood re do it again...

Is this the real Mr.J? If so his words should be taken as gospel. He's lettered more world famous race cars on the east coast that pretty much any one!

It's nice to see you on the board!!

Didn't some of the cars you lettered start with a "J" and rhyme with Ungle Jim???

    Zilla!

Don't see anywhere that Lettering Cost has been qouted ...Maybe missed it BUT Don't blow it by getting lettering that ruins a good resto job. The people EXPECT to see it AS IT was ....Thats what we used to call: Verigated Dutch Leaf-heated treated multi-color.To be applied by someone that knows what their doing ...Mr. J said it Just As I would . Not all crack kills ;) I once knew a gal.....err never mind.

    Dude I am dead serious.

Imagine if you will a group of cronies from days of old when vinyl was a record (we used to listen to those in the olden kids) all in one place with a fresh canvas to go ape **** on. Like a HAMB chop for old style paint seminar. Call it "Lost Art" or something.

Each get a booth to sell all of thier stuff and make some cash. Food. Drinks. Cackle deal. Art and book signings... Beer...admission, proceeds to the Pinstriper/Airbrush Union retirement home.

I'd fly in to see that deal take place. As well I am sure in the right town (Vegas...hehehe) or track location promoted well it would turn into a hell of a gathering.

I shall buy the first ticket!

Well the Veneys Vega is in the paint booth as of yesterday
at Eagle Street Automotive in Vancover Washington,..
we sprayed a coat of primer on it for solid coverage, and to also look for any imperfections,..Its ready, and we will paint it red on monday,..looks like if the arrangements stay intact I will be having Paul Comeau do all the lettering later in the week,..crossing my fingers....

Look for the Veneys Vega at the Fall Funny car Cl***ic in Woodburn Oregon on Sept. 12th & 13th and also at the 2009 Cali Hot Rod Reunion at Bakersfield in October.

    thanks

  30. Hey Vic, do it any way you can, I understand about money issues, been laid off since last Oct. The best thing about vinyl is that it comes off easier than it goes on.
You could do the vinyl now and paint when you get some money. It is real easy for others to tell you how you should do it, but it's still coming out of your pocket. I for one am just happy you are attempting to restore the car. The only way I can relive the "glory" days is in 1/25 scale, I would love to have an original funny car but thats not going to happen, good luck with the project. I am looking forward to seeing it at CHRR. Oh and when your there check out some of the other restored racers, not all had the Pat Foster treatment, some of them made concessions.
