I have an aftermarket dipstick in a 700r4 trans. I need to know where the******* fluid level should be so I can mark the new dipstick. I don't have a stock dipstick to use for reference. I sure don't want to put in too much fluid. I think the filter should be covered with oil. I read somewhere that the level should be 1/4" below the fill port casting with the trans oil warm. I haven't been able to verify this and was hoping someone knowledgeable could enlighten me.

Full level will be just below the hole where the tube goes in. In other words, if the tube had an o ring on it, it would be just below the o ring. Hope that’s clear as mud.

Worst case scenario, go to home Depot and get the smallest straight steel rod, Grind off the end so that it's rounded and won't get hung up as you stick it in the dipstick location....stick it in until you hit the bottom of the pan. Hold your thumb at the entrance opening and pull it out. Measure the depth of the pan, and subtract the measurement from the first measurement, mark your dipstick at that length. Level should be the depth of the and plus about half inch at the most.

Full hot fluid should be level with the pan gasket. Remove pan, insert dipstick, mark at gasket mating surface on trans. Put back together.

I know this sounds stupid, but I have seen it with my own eyes. Make certain that your dipstick is not long enough to touch the bottom of the pan. It will eventually wear a hole in it if it does.

The end of the dipstick should be about 3/4” past the end of tube, I can measure and take a photo tomorrow.

Yeah, it would be above the pan rail. Look in the hole where the dipstick grommet goes and right below that boss is where you want it.
