Vertex question

I have a 283 in my Forty coupe, I got a deal on a used Vertex. I installed it and it runs great. A buddy seen it and went into a fit about it needs a bumper on the timing cover to prevent the cam from walking through it. I'm running a flat tappet cam. Question is, do I need to weld a stiffener inside the timing cover and install a thrust button? Thanks
