Just wonderin' I found a few in an old grain bin that I want to play with.. I see them all the time at tractor/threshing shows.. just sittin' on stands runnin'.. They sound pretty cool to my ears... and like someone else mentioned some of them are worth a couple bucks too..

When I was about 10 years old, circa 1960 my dad built my brother and I a car powered by a Maytag washing machine motor. The body had the lines sort of like a Jeep, frame was built of wood. It had automotive style steering. Still have a picture of the two of us sitting in it.
The most unique part was the "transmission/drive train. It was a push style lawnmower, "flipped over" and the Maytag motor mounted so that the motor drove the shaft that the mower blades used to ride on. This provide one heck of a low gear ratio, making for a slow but powerful ride.

  5. This is a 1949 Austin J-40 peddle car with a bakelite banjo wheel, leather upholstry, e-brake and faux 4 banger with plugs.
The body is made from the same metal as the real Austins. I saw an old Mech Illusrated that some motorhead put a Maytag in one.

I picked this up at the BBT50s swap meet last summer. It is a Starlite built in the late 50s or early 60s. I've never been able to find much info on it. Was in great shape. I cleaned it up, buffed the body, and made a windshield. This is my Granddaughter driving it last fall.

Here's one my Dad and I built in about '76 or 77. The front nose is an old tractor gas tank, the body is aluminum rivited over gas welded conduit. Snowmobile ski spring for the front cross spring, motor cycle rear coilovers. the motor, clutch, transaxle were all mounted on a wishbone with a large single heim at the back and a panhard at the front.

The #7 (blown up from a Seagrams add) was 1/2 of the #14 modified dirt track car that Dad wrenched on. Some of these parts (front axle ***y) came from an earlier version that was space tube framed conduit, full cage and aluminum bodied. At 7 years old I was going flat out around a 1/4 mile cinder track (the high school was burned down) 40-50 MPH with the back end hangin out, lapping all the minibikes, minicycles, brutecycles, Rupps, in the neighborhood, until the neighbor across the street built his kid a snowmobile (440CC) powered cart that was a absolute terror. Man those were the days!

I just picked this little ****er up today.

Any idea when and who may have built this? We believe it's from the late 30's maybe early 40's.
